Gave up on rebuilding the turbo and ordered a cartridge today. It was too damaged with loose variable vanes.
Started reading about reinstalling the timing chain cover and nearly dropped a Censored when I found out it should be done with a positioning tool and they are about £120. For a turned lump of metal.
I’ve measured the end of the crank and measured the cover and will make one on the lathe for the total cost of £0

Aiming to get it back in at the weekend but tonight’s session outside was hardcore with the cold

Good luck -it sounds like you are making good progress and it will be better than factory when it’s done, and you’ll know every inch.

It’s a pain that the weather is not on your side - but it’ll warm up shortly👍

That's a bit excessive considering that the proper genuine tool from Bosch is £19.07 +VAT etc. Shocked

It is excessive
£20 is more like it

I’ll still make one later to save waiting on delivery

It’s back in and all connected bar one connector. I can’t for the life of me find where it goes to. It’s from the engine loom at the back by the ecu but I can’t find the connection for it. I am sure the collective knowledge on here will know

I’m thinking I’ve got it on the wrong side of the engine. It seems dusty not oily so I’m thinking it goes along the top of the gearbox somewhere. I can’t find any reference to it online but am probably looking in the wrong place. It’s this oil and water then finished.

Thank you thank you thank you
Near or offside?

I’ve been out there on my back in the rain for two hours. I thought it was down there but can’t find it.

It’s not the best spot to refit an engine in the weather we have had

Once again thank you Martin. Found it and connected it.
Filled with oil and coolant. Need to run it up to get the final coolant fill. Battery on charge for an attempt at starting tomorrow. Fingers crossed the epic effort in freezing weather has been worth it

It’s running.

Got a p0100 code to start with but that was only a shonky cable above the connector. I’ve cut it off and arranged it so it works and will order a new connector.
Small oil leak by filter housing to investigate and good to go
