I believe that the drivetrain losses will be fairly constant regardless of speed, it is undoubtedly the brick-like aerodynamics which make the huge difference in consumption between say 50 mph and 60 mph, or 60 mph and 70 mph. This is because, as gilpinxit pointed out, the aerodynamic drag is exponential, increasing in proportion to the square of the speed.

In very unscientific testing I achieved approx 5mpg more travelling at circa 60mph rather than 70mph...

Standard MY2014 110 Utility XS with no roof rack or bars on factory fitted Conti's 330-360 miles to a nearly empty tank.

Long runs are marginally better of MPG but then I suppose I drive a little faster on the long runs than the short trips I do.

Never managed much more.

Without wishing to stir up many an old post, but I try to run non-supermarket diesel (usually BP) and I dose Millers at every fill up. One or the other (or maybe a mixture of both?) appears to give me another 20-30miles to a tank. not sure how or why, but it does and the engine sounds a lot sweeter for one, the other or both Laughing

There is a difference in fuels supplied to different brands of service stations, the base stock of fuel is very similar, and meets the EN spec (590 for diesel) but the additive blend (detergents, inhibitors, lubricants, cetane/octane improves) added to that base stock varies depending on brand and grade.

Forensic fire investigators can use this unique fingerprint to ID the source of the fuel if needed.

With 5seats, km3s and camping equipment (2nd batt, ice box, furniture behind the 2nd row) and a roof tent behind a 4ft long roof rack ...

And if I fill thé 2 UNO jerrycans ( one on each side) it'll be more than 600 (on the road) Cool

Interesting reading, we run a 2.2 puma camper heavily loaded ( inc the kitchen sink Rolling with laughter) we average 22mpg & max speed is 65mph.
One interesting thing to note, we followed a 20t overland truck for a lot of miles & returned 28mpg! Not sure it was because of the slower speed or we were slip streaming him ( very tall & wide)

Many years ago I followed the Trailmasters truck through Morocco and managed in excess of 40mpg in my heavily loaded 300tdi Discovery. It's definitely the slow speed rather than slip streaming, as that effect is negligible at slow speeds. Darren

In 100,000 miles in my 2015 2.2 I always reckoned to get 150 miles by the 3/4 mark on the gauge, 250 by halfway and 350 by 1/4 mark and then it depended how brave you were, but usually filled up as the light came on around 400 - 420. It always averaged around 29mpg worked on speedo mileage and full tanks.
I`ve now put an auto in it (as it has retired from the high mileages of its first 5 years of life and mpg has dropped (like a stone!!!) but then it does town work and slower speeds generally now and a bit more towing. I don`t like to think about it but have used a tank down to needing to fill up in under 250miles! Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

Over 18 months in my 2.2TDCi with the JE 6 speed auto I’ve averaged 26.1mpg. (7805 miles, 1298 litres makes about 6 ml/litre). Roughly even mix of light town and dual carriageway/motorway. On open roads I stick to around 2000 to 2200 rpm which equally 60 - 65 mph. Tank only holds 57 litres so I start looking to refill at 300ml. Lovin’ it.
