I would politely quibble with XplusY - I wouldn't take the X3 off road at all. Not built for it, and not protected properly. A dirt road is about all I'd be brave enough to try.

Quibble accepted. My point was more a question of whether the X3 may be potentially more capable off-road than the X5 - maybe lighter with thinner tyres.. neither are particularly off-road focussed - like most SUVs.

It's a shame BMW haven't gone for a more full on off-road machine like a g-wagon.

The FFRR is nice, I had the Velar and when I looked at a lot of owners I realised I just didn’t fit in with the crowd. Even walking into these new JLR showrooms I feel out of place. 23.5MY 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE, Pangea Green

To be clear, these weren't neccessarily my alternatives.. just trying to be inclusive!

Glad someone's gone for the Panda.

I cancelled my order yesterday, so I'm actively trying to find alternatives. It's not as easy as it sounds, as there aren't very many cars I like as much as the Defender.

Currently, I'm considering:

1. Macan GTS, the facelifted version. I test drove the previous model when I originally test drove the Defender. I preferred the Defender, and I thought the dealer was better. Wait times on the Macan are around a year, depending on which dealer you go to.
2. Giulia Quadrifoglio, though the technology is a bit out of date (no LED headlights, no 360 degree cameras, etc).
3. DS4 - a completely different type of car. According to my local dealer, they won't have one in the showroom until December or January.

The Macan's are amazing value for money at the moment - assuming you don't go silly with the options.

Entirely off-topic, but if you're looking more for large, comfy luxury than off-road capability, the BMW 7 series seem to be hugely discounted (£80k car for £60k). I guess it's not selling as well as hoped.

How much off road?

If it was off road then it would be the previous Defender or D3. Something I don't mind some minor damage to.

Air suspension, 4-wheel steering, pretty handy off road, able to cruise any pavement/mall

Seeing a similarity to a Bowler there:

If your car starts with an X or Q, I can’t imagine a defender person would know what to say to them. Unless their doing a quote

Rob - I think we'd all like to think that's true.. But I think that really depends on your definition of a 'defender person'. If you're talking about the folks in sawn-off wellies & tatty overalls with an eye full of rust - you may be right.

But at the prices these things are going for now - where you'll struggle to get into a decade old defender for less than £25k, or a new one for £50k, I suspect the new target market has probably owned a couple of BMWs and Audis before upgrading to an LR product.

They are now definitely in a new price bracket. I have sadly had to order a Ford ranger as it’s 20k and has rear seats.

Modern defender having been in one still has a workable interior. It’s very capable. My personal view is the QandX’s are just for show. Unless someone as been using it to tow a trailer out of a field, or getting dirty on the green lanes.

It’s pretty much in a class of it’s own still. G wagon maybe.

Quite offensive, what's wrong with sawn off wellies and tatty overalls, some of us do a proper day's graft dressed like this and are still able to buy a new defender!

Im also of the straight back to FFRR camp. In fact having now sat in one and poked about, that is my exact intention when the L460 has had time for any problems to show for early deliveries.
