My 2009 2.4 defender keeps going into limp home mode
Hi I'm looking for some help. My 2009 2.4 defender keeps going into limp home mode when driving down the motorway normally when going to accsellorate to over take or pulling a trailer. (no lights on the dash) I then have to pull over shut the car down and go agen. until the next time it does it!. Its slowly getting more often and I'm sure its started black smocking from time to time.

folt codes that keep coming up are

P0234 turbo/supercharger over boost condition
P1103 mass air flow sensor in range but higher than expected
P068A engine control module/powertrain control module-power relay de - energised too early

i have all ready change these parts for new ones

- mass air flow sensor
- turbo
- fully service the car
- inlet manifold seals
- decocted the inlet manifol

Any help would be much appreciated thanks callum

I will put money on it being failed injector seals. Engine combustion blow back positively charges the rocker cover, spewing pressure and manky oil out of the breather pipe (back left corner of engine cover) straight into the intake. Over time this gunks up the turbo variable geometry vanes and causes them to stick which throws up this error as the actuator motor can't overcome the friction to adjust the vanes.

See my two posts below on how I resolved it on mine. I was getting overboost error every time I did motorway miles. It has been clear for approaching a year now since I did the below fix
I was also getting black smoke which I thought was due to remap but again, since doing the below there is no black smoke Thumbs Up

Hi thanks for getting back, i also changed the injector seals when i changed the inlet manifold seals. As i suspected the inlet manifold seals where leaking because the injectors where leaking and creating crank case presher. I will undo the oil filler cap and see if i have any pressure in there. Do you think it could be a blocked rocker cover breather ?. when i did the injectors i didn't talk the bolts down i just did them as tight as i thought they should be.

I seem to recall that I had the P0234 and P1103 when my steering column wore through the turbo-to-intercooler pipe. Then too the vehicle would go into limp mode (and I don't remember a MIL) and would reset on an ignition cycle.

It might be worth a quick check, since it is easier and cheaper than changing the injector seals.

I also seem to recall that the P068A is a common artefact of having a diagnostic tool plugged in.

Would be worth pulling the rocker cover again to check the injector hold down bolts are ok. These are stretch bolts and I think single use. They should be replaced and torqued really but I appreciate not always possible.

I've not known the breather to become blocked but possible for sure. Is your EGR OE or blanked?

Something else to check - pull the hose from airbox to turbo inlet 90 degree plastic elbow and check how oily it is inside. If caked in oil sludge then this will indicate an issue. If fairly clean then the problem is likely elsewhere.

Also worth a check is pop the PCV cover off with a screwdriver and check the condition of the diaphragm. If perished and gone hard then replace. It's not listed as a spare by LR but ford equivalents are available https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264278655230?fi...SwV25crwFK

Iv pulled the rocker cover and give the injector bolts a bit more of a nip up ( the didn't seem loos ) they where new when i did the injectors seals . The PCV valve look ok i also poped off the turbo hoes theres some oil/ sludge in there nothing to bad, when the engine is running and i undo the oil filler there is no prettier or smoke at all comes out when the engine is cold iv not done it hot. i also plug the car back in and its showing these folk codes

P0234 turbo/supercharger over boost condition
P1103 mass air flow sensor in range but higher than expected

any ides would be grate as i need to fix it thanks callum

The overboost error is usually a sign that the vanes inside the turbo hot side are sticky.

Disconnect the rod from the turbo actuator to turbo (be careful not to lose the c-clip), move the turbo vane lever back and forth by hand and feel for how smoothly notchy it operates. It should be fairly smooth, if you can feel it grinding then this could be your issue.

Could try a tin of wynns turbo cleaner through the turbo inlet, though personally I don't understand how that can clean the turbo hot side after it has been through engine combustion.

Otherwise it could be time to replace the turbo? I have a spare if you need one > 110 XS Double Cab

Hi i will try the actuator to see if its sticky, the turbo isn't even 6 months old ?? it cant be broken all ready. iv had the fault for about a year now ?? its unlikely to be anything with the turbo its self ? might try cutting the injector seats and putting new seals on agen ??

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

simple way prove this remove turbo actuator rod and see that vanes inside move

next check engine loon wiring leading down turbo actuator plug for damage

clip part number LR008722 just in cace

copper grease for reassemble it

turbo actuator unit have been none to fail and not controlling vanes inside the turbo

I had the exact same problem, mine was going into limp mode because it was over heating. At 112 deg C it went into limp mode and when it cooled down it went back to normal driving mode.
Check your temp accurately, the gauge on the dash will not show that it’s over temp until it’s way too late.

update the problem is getting worse , I'm have taken the turbo arm off and that moves nicely so don't think its that, to day I'm going to redo the injector seats and I'm going to cut the seats as well wiring loom looks ok. will report back later once the injectors have been done
