Excess Chuff? (Possible high engine crank case pressure)
Hello people,

If you could spare a moment, could you have a look at this video I've just uploaded?

https://youtu.be/22ZstZ6h3bk

It's of my engine running and me taking off the oil filler cap to watch the engine internal pressure vent. As you may have seen on another thread, I have an oil leak on my 2.4 (2011) car, oil is coming out of the fuel pump cover and hitting the serpentine belt and going everywhere. My local mechanic has replaced the plastic fuel pump cover so it's not that in itself and it's now leaking worse than ever (partly because I'm driving the car harder).

Money is limited so I need to have a think about what's going on. Why is it pushing oil out of the fuel pump cover? One reason could be excess engine pressure which is why I'd appreciate you people having a look to see if this looks excessive. My local mechanic (who I'm not going back to) says it's OK but it looks high to me but I only have original Mini engines to compare to. If I take the engine breather pipe off the rocker cover and block it for a moment, the increase in engine pressure pushes oil out of the fuel pump cover so surely this is what's happening when I'm driving? The breather system seems to work fine on tick-over and on the other thread there doesn't seem to be any serviceable parts to worry about. So I'm thinking injector seals? Maybe something else? It's a relatively low mileage engine at 65k and I don't usually potter about, it's only since it's started leaking I've taken it easy because taking it easy limits the oil leak!

Any help is much appreciated, thank.
Andy.

I would say holed piston.
Has it brought up any fault codes?

No faults. Car drives just as it always has so I don't think it's a piston. It's happy to rev out to 3000+ without any weird noises so I'm sure it's a simple problem.

Thanks.

Injector seals most likely. Very common. Cheap and easy to replace so start there, if that doesn't cure it then could be more sinister like rings, valves etc > 110 XS Double Cab

Some useful info on replacement here. Be sure to clean the seats and use new injector clamp bolts torqued up correctly as these are stretch bolts and single use or you'll find yourself doing the job again and again!

Thanks for the link. That's what I thought, I've got to get the spanners out. I'll order some bits and get going. Thumbs Up

I've got to be honest though yours looks to be blowing a hell of a lot. Maybe all seals are leaking > 110 XS Double Cab

Thanks Hank, much appreciated. I went to my local garages armed with my new found knowledge and put it to them. First surprise is how many of them said they either don't work on Land Rover or fuel injection or both!

But of those who took a look, the common question was how a leaky injector seal pressuries the cam chain cover to push oil out of the fuel pump cover? They said it's vent to atmosphere.

The seal(s) in question are the copper washers between cylinder head and injectors (item 14 or 27 in the image below)

If these are not sealing properly then pressure generated during the compression stroke leaks out of the cylinder past the injector and into the rocker cover... Pressure in the rocker cover is vented via the hose back left of the rocker cover back to engine inlet just downstream of the airbox.

OK, excellent. Thanks once again. I'll go and run it past him. I don't know why I have to do the investigation work, especially as it's just a Ford engine that's fitted to millions (I assume) of vehicles. I'm tempted to do it myself just so I don't involve these people!

Your help is truly appreciated. Thumbs Up

It's definitely a DIY job if you have basic tools. Would recommend a torque wrench to get the injector clamp bolts torqued down correctly. I picked up a cheap seat cutter off amazon recently too to clean up the carbon deposits on the head seats

You can pick up a kit off ebay etc for not a lot of money

Can you explain what you mean by the "fuel pump cover"?

I gathered the garage thought the "pressure" was coming from a fuel leak rather than the combustion chambers > 110 XS Double Cab
