Check the battery terminal, had possibly come loose

Check all fuses. Especially underseat ones.

Cheers guys... Fuses etc seem fine... Starter motor relay keeps blowing...??

The starter motor may be jammed in mesh, in that case.
You've just learned the hard way one of the several reasons why it is good practice always to start the engine with the clutch out. |

Panic over... I was either 1)stuck starter motor or 2)bad earth to isolation switch.. .done both these jobs at the same time so not sure what was the remedy... Thanks for replies guys👍

Good you got it sorted Busarider ![]() Blackwolf - sorry to be a numpty but that sounds like with the clutch not depressed - it's just that I have another car non-Defender that will only start with the clutch depressed ![]() 1993 200tdi 90 hard-top 1998 300tdi 90 soft-top |

Clutch out = clutch disengaged = pedal pressed
Clutch in = clutch engaged = pedal released. This is the way it has always been, you let in the clutch to pull away, throw out the clutch to stop. It is a generational thing, young folk don't understand the terminology! ![]() |

i always start my cars with the clutch in, force of habit. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Most modern cars (the annoying ones which now seem to assume that they know best) won't let you do this - you must press the clutch pedal in order for the starter to operate. You can't start an L200 without pressing the clutch, for example.

Great to hear you sorted it l also remember reading in the owner's manual there is a cut out switch in case of collisions so a bad jolt could trigger it
