Immobiliser gremlins
Hoping that someone else has had this so that I can fix quickly?

I have a 1999 td5 with standard factory alarm. No central locking on the car.

Problems started a couple of months ago when I returned to car with alarm set and car immobilised. I unset alarm and tried to start car and it would not start. Re set and unset again and all was well. Drove away from car park up a hill and engine cut out due to immobiliser. Reset alarm and fired up again.

Today came to get car out of garage would not start. I had not set alarm in the garage! Set alarm and unset a few times then engine fired up Rolling Eyes

Pulled car out and it stopped running due to immobiliser cutting in. Losing my temper and thinking there is a bad connection I thumped the top of the dash binnacle. Engine carried on running JUST and engine management light came on. Thumped it again and light went out. Confused

Did this a few more times and I could make the engine management light come on and go off at will. Engine stuttered a little each time but kept running.

Took car out for 30 mile drive and it behaved when I parked it up for 30 min. Once home I thumped dash again but now could not get the engine management light to come on Confused

I know this is a problem with the alarm but does anybody else have any experience of anything like this?

Any clue. To the source of the problem will be much appreciated.

I am confused..... Alarm but not central locking Confused So you can set the alarm without locking the doors?

Have you tried the battery connections? Have had it in a couple of cars when they are slightly lose and can wiggle and move about when driving which can break contact even if only temporarily which can cause all sorts of problems.... not too sure about the dash thing though

There are two types of alarm / immobilser one with central locking interface built in and one without.

I learnt this recently from Porny / IRB as I thought the boxes were all the same Thumbs Up

It will probably be your alarm unit screwed to the bulkhead which has got wet and corroded the pcb tracks which is quite common.

Sounds crazy to me that you can set the alarm without locking the car..... bit back to front so it shouldn't supprise me with Land Rover Rolling with laughter

I am pretty sure the immobliser box (spider) lives behind the dials and is quite well known for dodgy connections hence your dash thumping temporarily curing your problem. You may be able to remove it and re-solder any loose connections. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Ok thanks for the replies Thumbs Up

I will take apart this weekend to have a look at the connectors

Is there a multi connector connecting the box to the loom or is the wiring just part of the loom?

If I need to turn alarm off is it a nanocom job to isolate it?

Is there any manual way to isolate alarm?

There is no 'Spider' on a Td5....

Behind the clock panel there is a green box attached to the bulkhead - check both the green and the grey plugs are clipped in correctly.

The 10AS units are quite prone to water ingress, but there are a few other things than can also cause problems.

You can turn off part of the alarm function using Nanocom, but the basic immobiliser function will still be there...

However, I can remove the need to have the 10AS unit if needed - making your Defender 100% immo off.


Is your alarm keyfob attached right next to the ignition key on your key ring?

Is it the Yellow Engine MIL that is illuminating, or the red MIL with what looks like a bolt of lightening through it?

Hi ian and thanks for reply,

The fob is next to the key on the keying , is this a secret code I am missing?

The light that came on was the orange engine management light

Don't know if it helps but on the back of the fob it says " auto watch 376-300 r9006 Srd 16

Glynn mine is like this, no central locking but alarmed, not so strange lol

have you tried changing the battery in the key fob?

mine wouldnt start once new battery started fine,

i could still arm teh alarm, but i had to be almost in the car to do it.

Right I have taken the dash apart tonight and realise now that my alarm is not factory fit but an auto watch alarm.

The original alarm is there but obviously not wired up.

I pulled out the auto watch alarm and tried to find a loose connection but could not

Put it all back in and all appears fine.

I guess that some wire must have been bent causing a bad connection Question

Anyway appears to be sorted
