United Kingdom 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Aintree Green
Hi Nat, of all the replies to the survey we have, your update is one the most interesting yet. Thumbs Up

Your 2012 Defender had a history of rapidly wearing out standard shafts at an average of 17,375 miles each.
1st, 17,200 miles
2nd, 25,200 miles
3rd, 14,500 miles
4th, 12,600 miles
Then on changing to the Ashcroft "Mk1" kit, it lasted 36,400 miles before it developed an oil leak. NOTE , it did not wear out or break the splines.

The significant thing is the Ashcroft kit lasted more than double the time a standard shaft would have, and it still didn't break.
At last, we have some figures that back up our hopes of a real fix.
Personally, I think the oil leak was a result of the same cause of the previous shaft failures, and again points to an alignment issue with the gearbox / transfer box.

Your other Defender, 2014 MY, is at the other end of the scale with 122,000 miles on the original shaft. Proof that they can last a long time.

Thanks for sending in those figures.
Cheers, Jason Very Happy

I had mine changed at a retailer's. I'm fully satisfied. 2x MOT - no oil leak detected

Perhaps I shouldn't have said that Confused

30000 kms on that one

I purchased a new defender in 2012. The shaft failed on a trip to France at around 10,000 miles. After many problems with the truck it was sold back to Hartwells Oxford.

We now have a 2010 which has covered 151,000 miles, it has a new clutch, new Ashcroft gearbox, Ashcroft transfer box and a Ashcroft rear diff and drive shafts. The gear box has the updated output shaft. It also has many other parts replaced replaced.

This weekend I am going to fit the Glynn Lewis drag and track rod upgrade ready for its MoT.

Why do we bother with such poorly built vehicles.

My wife has a 2010 vw Toureag which has covered 125000 miles. The only thing that’s gone wrong is a boot latch.

Adding to the history:

6th at about 111k because it was still leaking. The splines that commonly fail were still as new, but the splines on the female adaptor that go on the gearbox output shaft had considerable wear. The gearbox output shaft has some minor wear too, but usable. The output shaft wear started after installing the modified female adapter, as 2 of the splines on the gearbox output shaft were still intact. Replaced female coupling only.

Knowing the history of the Defender, measured the planarity of the faces of the adaptor housing. Max deviation at about 100microns (0.10mm), which is not a lot to me. All dowels still good. No idea how I could measure offset between gbox and tcase.

With its new yearly milage, interpolation data shows that current shaft will last another 15 years. So Im fine with that Thumbs Up 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Clutch rattle and judder prompted clutch replacement. Upon splitting g/box and trans/box the output shaft splines were dry and found to be worn with copius amounts of red dust. Spline degridation was evident. Also flywheel had too much corrosion to be rescued by refacing.

New LOF flywheel, clutch and g/box extreme output shaft fitted. Thanks to Luke at LOF for his help and guidance.

Mine's a 2014 2.2 TDCI 74,000 miles and from what I see from it's history, it's still on the original shaft.

But it does have quite a lot of drivetrain slack. The rear drive flanges are definitely worn, so will replace those with 1 piece shafts first, and then see how bad it is.

I've still got clunking after that, then I'll change it as a precaution. My mate's (2015 2.2) 90 left him stranded on a motorway slip road when the output shaft let go, and I don't fancy that!
