Thanks for the info all. Still like the look of the Jimny. And I LOVE the buzz. That's how to get a modern, retro iteration of a classic right. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I wanted to buy my missus a new Jimny but EU regs are going to stop that unless I can get one of the last 2020 ones Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

It’s still available but only as a 2 seater commercial vehicle.

As "pedestrian safety", type approval, legislation are often rolled out as an absolute rebuff to any design choices/challenges facing vehicle manufacturers, it's worth a look at the actual regulations, or at least one of them applicable in the EU:

Regulation (EC) No 78/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 January 2009 on the type-approval of motor vehicles with regard to the protection of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users
https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN...32009R0078

Noting that future technology may bring more retrospective design choices back into play:

"(6)Vehicles equipped with collision avoidance systems may not have to fulfil certain requirements laid down in this Regulation to the extent that they will be able to avoid collisions with pedestrians rather than merely mitigate the effects of such collisions. After assessing whether such technology can effectively avoid collisions with pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, the Commission may present proposals amending this Regulation to allow for the use of collision avoidance systems."

The Jimmy has sold out because it is no longer available in the EU. It was cocking up Suzuki Suzuki’s emissions targets.

The VW ID bus thingy is a concept car and doesn’t have to meet any safety standards. It’s just there to look good.

The key with the front of the car is to get the pedestrian to go up onto the bonnet, not down under the front wheels. That’s why the Wrangler and Grenadier have those ugly knee level bumpers, to smash your legs out from under you and spin you onto the bonnet. The Jimmy is substantially smaller vehicle (with a poor ncap rating), so it may not need the same jutting out out bumper to keep the pedestrian from going under the front.

Buzz is scheduled for sale 2022 so we’ll see if any changes have to be made. In my experience designers often blame regulations for their own shortcomings. WARNING.

That black Grenadier looks like a computer game Defender they haven’t quite changed enough of to get away with. Woeful.

I doubt EU pedestrian impact scores are high on Suzuki’s list

If the buzz is built like the ID3 (same platform) the pedestrian and driver safety is like nothing have come across in any other car. Ours is constantly warning and intervening. The ID light warns you if a pedestrian so much as looks at the road, the fronts built from very flexible material if I hit a wall I think id bounce off it. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Winter testing in Austria, not sure if that is a raised air intake on the left in the photo?

Looks much better with the in-grille lights being blacked out and less obvious. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Don't expect a well designed snorkel.

The vehicle design is far below any other 4x4. It's more a cheap van design.
They won't win a price on it and I bet the Queen will never use it.

Like that IVECO Defender thing... Confused

"The vehicle design is far below any other 4x4"

Assuming you aren't just referring to the superficial design, which is a bit wonky at the front, how do you come to that conclusion? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I assume they have an anti theft device in those doors as opposed to undoing the 4 bolts and nicking them. Or maybe there is some defender dna in there. 90S D250 fuji and loving it.

I guess the question really should be whether there is a market for stolen Grenadier body panels ~ would scrap value alone make it a worthwhile exercise?

As a contrast, having watched all of Powerful UK's videos, I'd be concerned just how many exterior panels on the new Defender are removable with just your bare hands. Pull hard enough and they all come off by design. The benefit of lantern clips...wait till there's enough of them out there and the professional light fingered Brigade have established a 2nd hand market...
