Failure 1) Tried to take the steering shaft off my 90 to replace it. Couldn't get good leverage off anything to pry with a pry bar or crowbar. Gave up. MOT test at a Landy specialist next week so might ask them to do it for me.

Failure 2) Finally made a start at replacing the driver side door mirror + arm, as for some reason it doesn't hold its tension anymore except for certain spots and is very easy to knock it from where I've got it resting. Opened the box I got a while ago as a replacement, only to find out I bought just the mirror and mirror housing. No arm included. Feck...

Failure 3) Finally made a start at looking into how to take the door card off, to replace all the door card clips/pins as the card is hanging loose. Couldn't work out how to undo the window winder. Gave up.

Success 1) Worked out why the door doesn't always shut and needs a good few attempts. Little round thing on the door striker on the pillar has broken so is now half the size. I need to push it towards the front of the car to get the door latch to shut the door properly. So now need a new striker assembly.

Success 2) There is none... Sad

Oh dear , I sympathise completely .

I can offer you some help with two of those .

1. To remove the steering arm , coat liberally in oil , undo bolts at both ends and withdraw bolts completely as the bolts go through small indents to prevent it falling off ! Try tapping with a piece of wood down from the bulkhead end onto the steering arm, also try and lever open the piece around the spline with a chunky screwdriver .
Failing the above and on the basis you’ve got the steering box end off , attach a ratchet strap to the arm from underneath the chassis and ratchet it up against something on the exterior of the vehicle (another vehicle) . Meanwhile tap away and it should pop loose !

2. The window winder is held in place with a wire circlip. Push the door card in a bit and shine a torch in behind the handle and you should be able to see it ! Pop it off with a screwdriver whilst turning the window mechanism against it . Easy when you know how . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Are these the bolts that hold the clamps over the splines tight? If so, I managed to get those off relatively easy enough and the bulkhead-end was wiggling nicely. It was just that middle-lower section that I couldn't get to slide so couldn't get the top-end to slide down and off.

The play itself is from the steering box UJ but rather than faff around trying to get the UJ off the shaft, I figured I'd just get a new shaft assembly as they're not terribly expensive. Ya know... when I was taking those spline clamp bolts out, I said to myself "well this is pretty easy! Sometimes it's a nightmare getting easy access to bolts but with this, I can just turn the steering wheel!". Laughing

I'll try the door card thing again tomorrow, and also have a look at my loose rear door locking mechanism.

Yes there are three bolts in total , you only need to remove the ones at each end clamp but you may find removing the third will help to take it apart .
You’ll need to knock the shaft down initially to pop it off the splines , then knock it from the other end to release it entirely .

If you have a puma you may find it easier to remove the airbox but that’s a bit of a faff . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

'tis a TD5.

The ballache issue I'm facing is that bloody brake servo and its piping being in the way of getting any leverage with a pry bar/crowbar.

Will try to find myself a bit of wood at work on Monday but with the MoT test next Thursday, I don't know if I fancy taking the chance of only being able to do some of the job with such a short timeframe.

My own fault. Should have tackled this sooner! 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop

Finally got around to doing an oil change and filter swap on the 110.
Managed to snap the wires for the water in fuel filter sensor Sad
And then spotted the low level brake fluid warning sensor wires had both snapped. Sad 1999 Defender TD5 110

Finally got around to doing the air box mod this evening. For 1/2 an hour after starting I wished I hadn’t bothered. But some persistence and plastic butchery later and I got the static fan out. Only time will tell if it has the benefits others have experienced but I’m glad it’s done now.

It is a bit of a tedious task isn’t it.
I remember when I did mine, not a big difference but worth doing.
Thumbs Up
