What happened? (shuddering)
Hi,

Stock 300Tdi 90

Less than a couple of miles from cold into a journey today, I was on a quiet side road pulling up to a junction, so doing less than 20mph and reducing speed. Suddenly there was a bit of rough shuddering and a struggle for forward momentum.

The shuddering sound/feeling was coming from, generally, under the seatbox or a bit forward of that.

At the same time the steering and steering wheel wanted to pull to the left and it seemed slightly reluctant to be easily turned the other way. I decided to head home, and turned around and set off, which again there was a bit of shuddering but then after getting up to speed, everything was fine, as if nothing at all had happened.

Sounds unlikely but I'm hoping it was some gravel caught in a propshaft yoke, causing this power loss and jamming it hence sending the vehicle sharply to one direction.

I should add that every time I start it and reverse after the handbrake being on for a while there is a bit of a clunk, even when I release the handbrake and push the vehicle by hand (I was doing this recently to push it onto the flat before jacking it to do a task).
The A frame ball joint has been replaced, yet I read somewhere that with some kits the washer they come with isn't thick enough resulting in the nut not being tight enough, however mine was lemforder so I'm assuming I'm fine in this regard.

What do you think? Thanks for reading.

Propshaft U.J? Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

At the time it seemed like a serious problem, I just don't think it would be from somthing caught in the brakes but I can have a careful look for any fresh scratching/scoring tomorrow.

Front propshaft is only 1000+ miles old, the rear isn't but seems sound.
When cruising along at speed everything sounds good.

I fixed a neighbour’s that did this, I thought a bolt holding the handbrake onto the t/box had come out and was jamming in the drum...I was right that time!

Greeni suggestion gets my vote, check the hand brake drum fixings. Perhaps try backing the adjuster right off and trying again- obviously being cautious as the hand brake will have little effect if needed.

I removed the handbrake drum - all was fine. Good opportunity to bench grease the rear propshaft anyway and I saw that the bolts holding the A frame upper link brackets to the chassis were a bit loose which should help explain some clunking.

I don't have any of the typical symptoms of a bad CV. The vehicle turns smoothly lock to lock with no clunking.
