Hi Andrew,

First, download this file: https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/attac...1458330603

And then search for “Connector: C1040L” this will give you ALL the pinout numbers of the plug.

Then download this file: https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/attac...1458330603

Scroll down to page 74, you should see the relative part of the circuit diagram. J100 (in this diagram is the C1040L connector) shows C1040R-3 and C1040R-4 the two wires that you need to link.

Remove the instrument cluster plug, and with a paperclip or similar bridge pins 3 and 4. Leave the plug out of the instrument pack and see if you can now start properly.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Tried the bridge and it started 1st time. now to breakdown the cluster to check the solder as per Andy's suggestion. Keep you all posted,

Dear all

Following the tip from Martin, I had all the connectors soldered as well as the can chip and main chip. No luck... Big Cry

Tomorrow I will create a permanent bridge between the wires, not sure if there are any long term risks with this fix, but I will be able to use the car.

Hi Guys, Bridge the wires today and car starts every time. One thing is that I have lost all gauges and some of the engine warnings lights, milage etc. I have only cut the wires and joined them together before the Cluster plug.

I just wonder if they should still go through the plug to the cluster and be bridged- but this doesn't seem right to me???

Im not sure - but maybe the chips have been damaged during the soldering.

I've not had a chance to try to make my spare instrument pack do this, but I think you are missing one or more of the power feeds. The hard-wired signals work (illumination and indicators etc) but anything involving the microcontroller aren't - fuel gauge, engine warning lights.

Check fuses 5 and 15 under the steering wheels just in case these have blown.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks Martin,

checked the fuses and ok. Have left the cluster with the guy who did the soldering to check specifically if he has damaged the chip through over heating. should have more information around this tomorrow.

Dear all, sorry for the long delay with this. turns out that the guy who did the soldering actually did fry the micro controller. I have now managed to get hold of a second hand IPAC same tear and SW / HW version. Everything now works with the exception of the yellow engine warning light, but Im guessing that this is due to a missing signal from the joined wires?
Have also found a garage over here who are fully kitted out with Landrover knowledge who will reset the the millage as per my original.

No, the orange engine lamp (MIL) is unrelated to the joined wires. The engine ECU is commanding that lamp to be illuminated over CAN, it needs the fault codes read Sad  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks Andy and Martin for this fantastic thread.
It’s a little old now, but I’ve lost the odometer and Speedo function and have intermittent function in my fuel gauge on my 2012 110. I’m using a HUD at present to manage my speed which I’ll probably keep as it’s great!

The Transmission sender works as proven signal at the OBD port re speed via my reader, so the faults either in the loom after that , the connectors or my instrument cluster.

My cluster has been modified with a gear display as I’ve an LS3 and 6 speed auto fitted, so your advice here has given me the confidence to strip my cluster to inspect the connections.

I have inspected the connector at the rear of the cluster and think I see burning and slight damage at pin 1. I’m not sure if that’s earth or power as I can’t find a diagram of the layout.

I’ll take another photo on macro and post.

I’ve bought another cluster (2nd hand 2013) and I know it needs to be authorised by the relevant computer gear from the UK and a correct replacement levered connector which arrived today here in Tasmania from the Motherland, so I’ve most of the kit to help me start fiddling.

There is no instrument tech anywhere near me on the island that I know of, so I need to do this myself.
