Car starts but wont run suspect ignition switch
Hi
1997 300 Tdi
Just stopped for fuel and the car wont start or run. All good before this.
No dash lights at position 2 of the key
At position 3 car starts and dash lights work if you hold it in this position it runs but starter motor engaged. return to position 2 and she stops.
Is the first port of call a new ignition switch or are there other possibilities ,relays ,fuses, earth straps etc

As said she runs in position 3 just nothing in position 2 , also to add main headlights wont work either in position 2 all other lights working.

And yes it was filled with Diesel not a fuel issue Very Happy

Thanks in advance

Mine had similar issues once, removed the cowling and found the back of the ignition switch had just about fallen out, new ignition switch fitted and was all good. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

A quick update
checked power at all switch positions and all measures normal 12+ v
Still no dash lights in position 2
Last thing in the circuit to check is a header joint K109 which I cant find
Anyone know where to look
All fuses good

I have a new switch ordered which I will fit when it arrives even though all appears normal there
Thanks for your input

C285-17 if I read this correctly is directly connected to switch position 2. I have power at switch but no dash lights

Fixed new switch arrived so decided to try it prior to chasing voltages
Old one internals pictured no damage but some wear
Top right on left position 2 but a couple were loose to touch

Thanks for your replies
