Due to Gbox oil leak I was able to asses the shaft. It was 'greased' at circa 20K at the local main dealer when they did the engine oil leak under warranty. and TBH It was mainly dry with some powder rust marks and only a small amount of something that looks like silver slip on it. The picture shows it after cleaning up. I have thoroughly re-greased it and reassembled, as the splines look fine.

As of yesterday this WAS in the motor and it is looking just as good as it went in previous when I greased it. Probably a just perceptible amount of play but it was still functioning fine.

Now been replaced with a LOF one piece shaft. No more worries here I hope.

Seeing that the transfer case needed to come out for some TLC due to a slow leak, I decided to do the Ashcroft upgrade and some other bits:

Major improvement in the gearchanges, and little to no drivetrain clunking. Thumbs Up --

the simple fact you have done that mileage on the same shaft must prove its the fit thats the problem and not the design!

My original factory-fitted shaft has now done 250k miles. This is also with two different LT230s, suggesting that (as I have suggested before) any alignment issues are likely to be with the extension housing and not either gearbox.

It'll probably fail now I've said that though! Big Cry

... that simple fact would have been proven, if the Ashcroft shafts failed since their only improvement is lubrification.
Misalignement rules them out.

Do you think if you use the lof shaft to replace a broken shaft and it is as you say a alignment issue ..will it move the problem up or down the drive train?

Yes, quite possibly. Rolling with laughter

Sorry, not the answer you were looking for. Who knows, I think it depends on many factors including the fit of the LOF shaft on the gearbox tailshaft splines and the flexibility of the LOF adaptor shaft, as well as how much engineering analysis went into the product. It may even eliminate the problem, only time will tell.
