TD5 shuts off in Traffic and won't start.
I was driving in the traffic and suddenly my Defender TD5 engine shutdown. I tried restarting it, but noticed that the engine management light and glow plug light will not come ON when the ignition switch is ON. As a result the engine fails to start.

I plugged my Hawkeye diagnostic tool and it initially reported a failure in communicating with the ECU. After several tries, communication was established. I read through the errors and one error that stood out, was "low voltage to the ECU". I've checked and wiggled the fuses and relays beneath the seat and dash board, but to no avail.

Can anyone help!!!!!

I was driving mine once and the inertia switch fell off the bulkhead and tripped! The plastic case had cracked.

It sits at the back of the engine bay on the bulkhead, Black with a rubber cap.

Check battery voltage, in case of not correctly working alternator, and battery discharged with running engine instead of charging it. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I had a problem like that. Unplugging and plugging back in the black plug helpt me to restart it everytime. I cleaned both plugs (no oil) and made an additional earth from the ecu housing to the battery negative. No problems after that ( more than a year) Roel

Thanks guys for the valuable input. I tried all the various suggestions, but finally narrowed it down to a faulty ECU. I sent the ECU to a company in the UK called ECUTESTING. They repaired it and sent it back to me.

My Defender is back on the road again with increased power output. Very Happy
