front td5 diff

HI

Not sure if this is a problem with the diff or not. i tried to drive up a mud bank and it would not climb up just wheel spun on the drivers front wheel with centre diff lock low range in-gauged. i put it on a ramp if i spin the rear wheel the opposite wheel turns the other direction directly proportional with minimal free play, but the front wheel i can turn nearly half a turn before i feel the diff catch and turn the other wheel the opposite way.

Is the diff likely to be cattle trucked or is this normal.

Might just need adjusting. It's not that hard to do but quite a lot of work to remove the front diff compared to the rear.

Oh and yes, that is a lot of play, I wouldn't say thats' normal

I would take the dust caps off the centre of the hub and check the drive flange splines for play first.

There will always be more play in the front axle than the rear though as you also have backlash in the CV joint and the halfshaft into the CV additionally to the rear ones.

It sounds to me like the diff lock is not working, as even if you have excessive play in the front diff then it should still work.

If the front diff (or a half shaft) was completely shot (no drive) then the Land Rover wouldn’t move unless the diff lock was engaged.

this sounds like two issues to look at. centre diff lock (CDL) and play in front axle drive train.

so only one wheel on front axle spinning, nothing on the rear spinning with CDL engaged? in which case CDL is not working as designed.

there is not necessarily anything amiss here with LR tolerances but it would be worth checking DM ends as above for play. 1/4 turn play would be normal..... Cheers
