Might just need adjusting. It's not that hard to do but quite a lot of work to remove the front diff compared to the rear.
Oh and yes, that is a lot of play, I wouldn't say thats' normal |

I would take the dust caps off the centre of the hub and check the drive flange splines for play first.

It sounds to me like the diff lock is not working, as even if you have excessive play in the front diff then it should still work.
If the front diff (or a half shaft) was completely shot (no drive) then the Land Rover wouldn’t move unless the diff lock was engaged. |

this sounds like two issues to look at. centre diff lock (CDL) and play in front axle drive train.
so only one wheel on front axle spinning, nothing on the rear spinning with CDL engaged? in which case CDL is not working as designed.
