Anti Stall
This may be a stupid question....but can the defender still stall when it has ‘anti stall’ in 1st and 2nd gear?!

The reason I ask is that I was in a wet grass field today and going along in second relying on the anti stall rather than the accelerator....and it stalled!

Anti stall is just an electronic governor, if the load exceeds the max torque the engine can make it will still stall, less likely in first and very unlikely in low range first and reverse where idle jack also kicks in. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Yes it will except for 1st and reverse in high and the same on low range. It would be because you were in 2nd low range.

Safety plays a part I would imagine too hence this being the case.
In low gears it’s a great feature, I use it all the time.

Even in those lowest gears it will not cut out transversing most terrain but if it hit an object it would do.
Again, I’m pretty sure this was tested in the past and is a safety feature. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Remember also that if you have any throttle input the anti-stall will disengage, so touching the accelerator can make it stall.

Anti-stall is only active when your foot is completely off the pedal.

I should add:

1. Was 2nd gear high range.
2. It was up a hill.

In that case you were probably demanding more torque than the engine can provide at tickover.

I also thought a Puma would never stall in 1st. I never stalled it in 10 years, and that includes starting from standstill on pretty steep uphill stretches in 1st high without touching the gas pedal. Until my daughter as a student driver once managed to stall it on flat grass land in our garden. Myth busted. Laughing

A foot slipping suddenely off the clutch will cause it to stall in 1st, especially when you're hanging out the door holding onto a lamb...

Interesting. The restrictor in the clutch hydraulic line is supposed to prevent that.
