My discovery td5 had a notchy 2nd gear, my td5 Defender doesn't, same gearbox as TDI as already said the r380, the difference was the transfer box as with td5 it became the lt230q supposed to be quieter, however I think my Defender has a whiny transfer box!

I've got a TD5 here in Teesside if you want to poke around it?

I may take you up on that offer, just to give me extra ideas on what they are like. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

No problem. PM me when you want to arrange something. I'm in Hartlepool a lot, so a bit closer.

Had a 300 for 6 months before it was stolen, then after a break (wasn't sure I could carry on sleeping with one eye open!) went for a TD5.
I prefer the TD5. However acknowledge my short experiences may skew the thinking.
I must have been robbed, I paid silly money but don't seem to be able to find the electric windows, central locking, aircon or in fact a radio that others seem to think they came with Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I have my eye on an 02 plater onwards, The insurance want a CAT 1 tracker fitted to the replacement, which is fare play. Also I have said what I was going to do. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

You don’t really need aircon in a Defender unless it’s a TDCi without the vent flaps.

Central locking is nice to have if it’s a 110, and electric windows again not really needed in a Defender.

well still looking sadly, Two I looked into going to visit have been sold, I had just secured my ££ and the dealer goes and sells it. So I am still on the look out! What is the difference between the Defender transfer and the disco transfer? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Defender has a 1.4 drive ratio and disco is 1.2 ratio. I have put disco transfer gears in my box as it allows the car to cruise better and scream less on the motorway. Downside is if you do a lot of heavy towing it’s harder to pull away in first. This is because the transfer box sits after the gearbox so if it has a disco box it effectively raises all the gears a bit.

Personally I love having the disco ratios on my td5

Map and disco gears are the best for everyday “modern” driving.

I’m still running Def gears on the new one, and miss the Disco gears Big Cry

No they are ok and better than standard Tdci with its stupid first gear. But disco gears, and the bit more torque via a tune is a great combo.

I have heard that these can give silly bhp with a good tune and turbo and intercooler. I am thinking about making my next more aggressive, due to people on the A19 wanting to play funny Censored . Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
