England 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green
I see what you mean, I had a 300tdi years ago as my first Defender, no electronics on it to worry about.

The td5 is much nicer drive though and and the mod cons are great, it was what I wanted at the time but couldn't afford. It's a good balance between old school and modern Cool

All Defenders were reclassified as commercial vehicles around 2011. So if you can stretch to any 2.2 TDCi you’ll pay only £230.
Some late 2.4 SW crept into the lower tax band as well. Worth checking when looking at one to buy.

What is the air con like on these? I have seen two with air con on. Is it troublesome or worth having? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

The later ones are a bridge to far for me to cross sadly Sad
me and my dad had a chat yesterday, with me young enough to get a loan out, I was going to give my dad 2k to get his chassis swopped. His defender is the last ever motor he will buy now, so its his asset. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

My 2003 has aircon , I had a small leak on one of the pipes a couple of years ago, but since then it's been trouble free. It gives a good blast of icy air and helps with condensation. Recommended if you find one with it fitted

Several models of 2.4 from 2007 on are also N1 with the lower tax, essentially all commercial variants (HT, PU, DCPU). Don't discount these.

The air con is fine and works adequately, great to have.

Only problem with td5 air con is that it only cools your nuts I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

TD5 aircon is OK. It’s basically a big carbuncle under the dash and is separate from the heater. So it can’t blow cold air on the screen directly.
But it does work, and is worth having if you can get it. Having said that my CSW 110 doesn’t have it and l’ve not really had a problem, in the summer l just open the vents and windows.
Aircon won’t usually work below about 5deg C so in the Winter there’s not much difference.

The TDCi aircon/heater is much better, although the fan is noisy even on the lowest setting and it doesn’t have the bulkhead vents.
I would say you need aircon more in a TDCi than a TD5.

It's perfectly adequate despite its after thought design (I quite like it!), providing you adjust the vents so it doesn't just freeze your knees/nuts! Thumbs Up

Obviously, the tdci is a much more integrated/efficient system but it was thoroughly revised with the new dashboard.

As above Td5 ac works ok, and gives very very cold keys, but in a Tdci ac is a must due to no bulkhead flaps, and the fact the transmission tunnel gets stupidly hot on a long drive, which is made even worse by opening a window.

TD5 has dual mass flywheel, bu it is not a problem, normally it survives longer than clutch. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Yes, helps feather out some of that extra torque once youve got it remapped!
