Lumpy running td5
Over the last week the 1995 TD5 90 has been feeling very heavy to drive, requiring a lot more movement on the pedal to get moving. On the motorway I struggled to hit 70 with foot to the floor, when normally it fly's past this speed without issue; after a few minutes there was a terrible smell. MPG hit 21 this fill up, previously it was 24-25.

Apologies if any words or terminology are off; I'm an absolute beginner who bought a socket set and have been peicing together whatever I can from the forum. (Thanks everyone!)

I checked for excessive heat on the brakes and handbrake drum, but didn't feel too hot to touch I've checked the turbo waste gate and that moves freely, given a wee dose of wd40 to be safe.

MAF was replaced with a genuine VDO two weeks ago and MAP sensor cleaned with electrical contact cleaner.

The fuel pump seems to run (quietly), but for about 30 seconds when starting the engine. I swear it used to be louder for a shorted period.

I decided to have a good look around the engine so took the acoustic cover off and there seems to be a a lot of fresh black stuff around the silver lump, which I guess is the engine. I've attached pictures as my description is wholey inadequate. Also looks like it's been dripping. Upon checking the oil level it is now above max... Feels like it has gone up but can't 100% confirm this.

Anyone got any ideas before I start to pester my mechanic (he's a bit of a drive away). If it's injector related I'll be seeing him as not that confident yet but hoping it's something I can maybe deal with.

If fuel consumption has increased along with oil then that's your problem. DO NOT DRIVE IT!! until you have rectified the problem.

It can be one of two things.

Injector seals and washers need replacing or a cracked cylinder head.

Start by changing the injector washers then do an oil and filter change and closely monitor the oil level. If after replacing the injector seals and washers it rises again then its likely the head is cracked Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

You need to be sure if your oil level is raising or not. If unsure drop the oil and fill with new to the level. Then monitor it.

The stains oil on the engine don’t look anything to major to me.

The smell sounds strange and makes me very much think brakes. Although I read you think they are ok. Have you checked your wheels turn freely?

My engine looks in a similar conditions, No problems with it.

I had a overheat once where the coolant evaporated through the insecure lid.

I've got a load of gumpf on my EGR...

I wouldn't be too worried about MPG unless its hit the teens, I've had 23, 25 & 27 MPG and it fluctuates like the wind.

I especially wouldn't be worried unless your coolant goes missing or oil turns to cream...

In terms of smell i once hit a pheasant that disappeared as soon as i hit it, Turns out it had bounced up into my engine, made the whole thing stink like chicken for a whole month, until i hit a speedbump fast enough I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

I don't think too much emphasis can be put on the fact that diesel in your oil drastically thins it, reducing its lubricity. In anything but the extremely short term - damage will be done to your engine, if the problem is ignored.

If fuel is getting into the oil then you'll smell diesel on the dip stick. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

If you suspect diesel in your oil. Put a spot of oil onto some paper, if it spreads out with a halo around it, the halo is the diesel as it spreads more due to being thinner.

Thanks for all the replies so far; amazing. Bow down

I've done the paper test with the oil - no halo, also didn't smell very strong; so i think i'm safe on that one for now but I'll keep a close eye on it and check it each morning for the next few weeks.

Nice reassuring answers about the state of the oil around the engine - had a check, couldn't find a pheasant Smile

I have checked for oil in the red ecu plug; I've attached pictures. It's a little greasy but not sure whats normal or not. What do you think?

It’s not the worst I’ve seen but I’d still clean it out with electrical contact cleaner. Ray

Quick update, oil level is holding steady; I've given a few days running and does seem a little happier now after cleaning the plug but something does feel off.

I've been underneath to have a look and spotted some fresh oil from the gear box (or transmission?) - is this anything to be concerned about? droplet at the top of the picture and looks like coming out around the plug

I think i'll stop after this one and take it in for a quick look rather than pestering, else start my own "does this look right" thread!

Thanks!

That drip of oil is too clean to be engine oil, and should be red if gearbox oil. So some investigations are required.

Drive with the MAF unplugged for a day or two and see if drives any better. A long shot but you might have got a dodgy new maf. Ray

Thanks for everybody's time. What a great bunch you are.

Incase anyone has similar problems and finds this thread; in this case it turned out to be Diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator.

All booked in to get sorted by a bloke with far more skills than I (for now!)
