If fuel consumption has increased along with oil then that's your problem. DO NOT DRIVE IT!! until you have rectified the problem.
It can be one of two things. Injector seals and washers need replacing or a cracked cylinder head. Start by changing the injector washers then do an oil and filter change and closely monitor the oil level. If after replacing the injector seals and washers it rises again then its likely the head is cracked 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

You need to be sure if your oil level is raising or not. If unsure drop the oil and fill with new to the level. Then monitor it.
The stains oil on the engine don’t look anything to major to me. The smell sounds strange and makes me very much think brakes. Although I read you think they are ok. Have you checked your wheels turn freely? |

My engine looks in a similar conditions, No problems with it.
I had a overheat once where the coolant evaporated through the insecure lid. I've got a load of gumpf on my EGR... I wouldn't be too worried about MPG unless its hit the teens, I've had 23, 25 & 27 MPG and it fluctuates like the wind. I especially wouldn't be worried unless your coolant goes missing or oil turns to cream... In terms of smell i once hit a pheasant that disappeared as soon as i hit it, Turns out it had bounced up into my engine, made the whole thing stink like chicken for a whole month, until i hit a speedbump fast enough I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/ Current: TD5 '110 "Lucinda" Thread here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic62562.html |

I don't think too much emphasis can be put on the fact that diesel in your oil drastically thins it, reducing its lubricity. In anything but the extremely short term - damage will be done to your engine, if the problem is ignored.
If fuel is getting into the oil then you'll smell diesel on the dip stick. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

If you suspect diesel in your oil. Put a spot of oil onto some paper, if it spreads out with a halo around it, the halo is the diesel as it spreads more due to being thinner.

Thanks for all the replies so far; amazing.
I've done the paper test with the oil - no halo, also didn't smell very strong; so i think i'm safe on that one for now but I'll keep a close eye on it and check it each morning for the next few weeks. Nice reassuring answers about the state of the oil around the engine - had a check, couldn't find a pheasant I have checked for oil in the red ecu plug; I've attached pictures. It's a little greasy but not sure whats normal or not. What do you think? Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

It’s not the worst I’ve seen but I’d still clean it out with electrical contact cleaner. Ray

Quick update, oil level is holding steady; I've given a few days running and does seem a little happier now after cleaning the plug but something does feel off.
I've been underneath to have a look and spotted some fresh oil from the gear box (or transmission?) - is this anything to be concerned about? droplet at the top of the picture and looks like coming out around the plug Click image to enlarge I think i'll stop after this one and take it in for a quick look rather than pestering, else start my own "does this look right" thread! Thanks! |

That drip of oil is too clean to be engine oil, and should be red if gearbox oil. So some investigations are required.

Drive with the MAF unplugged for a day or two and see if drives any better. A long shot but you might have got a dodgy new maf. Ray

Thanks for everybody's time. What a great bunch you are.
Incase anyone has similar problems and finds this thread; in this case it turned out to be Diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator. All booked in to get sorted by a bloke with far more skills than I (for now!) |
