Is it worth upgrading the intercooler?
Hi,

Currently have the Bowler Stage 1 tune with no other modifications to the engine. Considering upgrading the intercooler but wanted to ask if it will make any noticeable difference. I don't tow or use the car to transport heavy load and 90% of the usage is in town driving. In terms of options it seems that Alive and BAS are the two to go for. Would have liked to get one from Bowler to keep things consistent but doesn't seem like they do one...

Bowler use a bespoke PWR intercooler for their Stage 2 upgrade and desert spec. Pricey but probably the best you can buy.

Whether it's worth upgrading for the use you describe is debatable.

I found fitting the ultimate intercooler from Alive made no difference at all to my tuned Tdci.

Bigger IC = cooler/more dense air = more torque in basic terms. Instagram @defender_ventures

Did you have the map tweaked utilize the bigger intercooler?

Yes, map done, swapping exhaust made much more difference. This was on a Tdci.

Interesting, I found it made a noticeable difference... IMO less than the exhaust? Shocked

I have a full sports exhaust with no cat too...

This was all before hybrid turbo too

Times like this i think sticking the car on the dyno and actually seeing what it's doing makes the most sense...

BAS website says...

Quote:
We insist on thinking about fitting an up-rated Performance Intercooler to help maintain a lower cooler charge and air intake temperature when cars are worked hard or for long periods. This is especially important when working at high engine rpm or road speeds and especially so when used in hot country’s and climates. High exhaust gas temperatures and air intake temperatures can reduce the life of the engine and related components if low temperatures are not maintained.

I have just the standard tune, but I do have the Entreq intercooler which is identical to the Alive Tuning ultimate intercooler. No noticeable increase in performance, but the idea of lower air intake temps, i.e. lower engine running temps gives peace of mind in the summer. And together with the PEL500110 soft spring 82° thermostat the risk of overheating is sharply reduced which is a good thing.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I don't think that upgrading the intercooler will have any effect on the engine operating temperature. Any such benefit - if measurable, is incidental.

I feel there was no benefit then surely there'd be no benefit of fitting an intercooler at all... I wouldn't expect a performance increase but I just thought it was healthier to have the lower intake temps on a tuned engine.

I have the BAS hi-flow IC, but had it fitted with teh BAS 170AB remap so can't comment on if you feel any difference. I was recommended it as I tow, but Pete said it wasn't essential if not towing. However, i felt increasing power by 40% the engine must benefit from the extra cooling, not necessarily in performance but for longevity? Good oppourtunity to change to silicone hoses too... where does it stop Shocked James
