Well the bits have arrived from Farnell

And they look like they should fit quite nicely

Now to see if I can get a plate made to fit inside the KBX frame and cut with a hole for mounting the Powercon ports.

I'm most impressed with the size compared to the 16A blue plugs and sockets I'm used to using. I went for the combined inlet/outlet in the end so that I can have power inside the Defender and plug the other half of my existing hookup cable into the outlet and have 240v available outside as well. Keith

looking forward to how you wire this all up, are you using the hook up to charge an aux battery?

The plan is to run a length of 3 core flex from the blades on the rear of the socket into the rear of the USW and install a 3 gang outlet in the load space.

The sockets will be used for the ARB fridge, Coffee maker and a C-tek that I'll plug into the 12v socket, that normally runs the ARB in the load space to top up the Aux battery while we're camping. The awning lights and scenelights along with the USB outlets are all off the Aux battery already.

I'll post some photos once I get it fitted. Keith

I don't have a fridge or a coffee machine Mr. Green

I like the idea of a hook up to a battery charger to keep the aux battery topped up though overnight as we'll be using the lights, Usb and heater an awful lot next month.

So,
Is it a good idea to run the mains cable between the under seat boxes in place of the wire going from the battery to the alarm?
And make sure you don’t have any breakers on the feed from the house Wink

Little bit of time with the dremel and it now fits.

Just need to finish of the cut edges and fill the rear of the rib that I cut, probably best not to Epoxy in the kitchen.

Doesn't protrude too far to the ear so plenty space for the cable behind it.

Now just need to get some M3 bolts/screws and make up a plate to go on the rear so that I can sandwich the remains of the KBX grill between the Powercon and the plate. Keith

Would these be 'quick release' in case anyone drove off without remembering to disconnect it?

I believe they are classed as a locking connection, there are people on here more knowledgeable than me who will be able to confirm.

That was one of my considerations when I decided to mount it in the redundant wing vent, it's right next to the drives door so pretty obvious. In our case the foxwing may also be a bit of a hint before trying to drive away. Keith

They lock into position...if you drive off you'll rip everything off before these plugs disconnect Laughing Thumbs Up

If you fit mains wiring to your Defender in this way, should the vehicle structure be connected to mains earth? I am aware that BS7671:2018 (18th Edition IET Wiring Regs) sas quite a lot about mains wiring into caravans and motorhome, which I imagine is applicable to this case, but I don't have a copy to hand to check.

Anyone know?

Mo

Got the vent grill modified and will get that mounted in the next day or two. I'll get some pics posted.

I'm seeking some guidance from a friendly Electrical engineer on 18th edition. So far it looks like fitting an inline 30mA RCD is the way to go, just after the Powercon panel.

I'm now looking into options for outlets in the rear. Powercube with USB looks like a nice compact option. Keith

I'd question whether you need a 30mA breaker as I suspect all outlet feeding this will already be fitted with a RCD assuming they comply with current regs. I believe regs for the last circa 20 years and more had required the use of RCD for anything that might be used for something external.

I guess better safe than sorry and all that but something to consider all the same.
If your having multiple circuits / MCB perhaps look to change them for RCBO's.

food for thought.
