TD5 owner ship,
Can you lads give me some info on the differences with these compared to the TDI 300?
its looking very likely that I have lost my 300 TDi, and I will have to use what cash I get back off the insurance to pay off the remaining Loan sadly. So I will be back on the look out, but i am going to push for the TD5 after the fiasco with the 300 been nicked. At least i can do a hell of a lot more electrical wise to stop this nightmare i am having coming back at the moment. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Sorry to hear your news. Really sorry, that sucks.

Td5's in my opinion is THE engine to have as your only Defender, I've had them all and a td5 wins hands down.

Procta, we feel for you, but you may have made the right choice.

As above 10Ps while more affordable initially, can have cost implications should they ever go wrong, but then again every car does.

TD5s are harder to work on i feel. But more comfortable. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

We had a 300tdi Station Wagon and swapped it for a 2003 Post update TD5 Station Wagon.

The two are not worlds apart. The TD5 is more refined and a bit faster. It’s got electric windows and central locking, and the dash is a bit better as it’s electronic.
On post 2001 update versions you get the central console with all the switches and the stereo and it does have a more modern feel.
The TD5 is better on the motorway.
It’s easier to get a good TD5 but don’t pay the silly prices some are asking on Ebay.

Sorry to hear about the theft, bad news. Bit of a bummer knowing that you still have a loan to pay on it, fingers crossed the insurance cover it - of course you could ask them to source an equivalent vehicle as a replacement or maybe top up for a newer one?

I have Td5 110 & before that 300Tdi 90, the Td5 is a lot more drive able if you want acceleration & top end speed compared to the 300 Tdi. But there seems to be no benefit in things like fuel consumption or running costs & I actually prefer the 300 Tdi off road as its a plodder & there's no need to use low ratio to get less acute throttle response. Yes, it's nice to have electric windows & Central locking but they're both just more things to go wrong over time - look at the threads on this forum, there's nothing wrong with 'keep fit' windows & a good old fashioned key!

If budget is the deciding factor then I think the 300Tdi is the answer, there seem to be a lot of crazy priced Td5s for sale, even with spaceship mileages on them!

ATB.

Love my TD5, sadly I cant compare to other, as its my first Defender...

I can however tell you of my troubles...

Check the ECU for oil - a new injector loom will cure oil ingress (and several good cleans with a hoover on the end of the loom to suck out any remaining oil.)

As per any Defender to check for rust...

This a good quick read,
https://www.lro.com/reviews/1998-2007-land...4x4-review

and there is another thread I will try to find, which gives a full in depth guide on what to look for...
I printed mine to take with me.. And I haven't been able to find it since... I post if I locate it... Regards
Adam

A Td5 is the best Defender you can have, in my opinion, and I’ve had most apart from the 2.2tdci, (which I’ve driven, and it’s still a poo Tdci engine like the 2.4). That’s why I’ve just got back into a Td5 Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

There are just enough bits to make it a great everyday vehicle (central locking, power, electric windows), and none of those are over complicated. For instance power windows are just two wires, no fussy safety stuff, and one touch.

I had a 300 Tdi for over a decade before I picked up mt 110 Td5 CSW a few years ago. i thought the Tdi was the best there was. The Td5 is smoother, quieter and can be modified to a higher output than the Tdi. Gauges are better and overall it is much more refined. It is all electronic however once properly sorted (just like a Tdi or VCool it is very reliable. In my opinion better than the Tdi and likely the best motor LR ever put in a Defender. Serious bummer about your Tdi. Big Cry

Thanks lads for the replies, What sort of tax brackets do these run into? Well price per year would be great. I know it changed on the Y plate as my 306 falls into this boat.
I am used to electronics due to the 306, For me its all about the security side now after this nightmare, What are the MPG like compared to the 300 TDI? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I have 90 H/T and pay approx. £240 tax per year.

I typically put in £40 per week and do about 800 per month so get approx. 200 miles for £40.

MPG are comperable if a little better on the Td5, bone stock that is, (non modified ECU and engine upgrades). Once you start up fueling and things it goes down dramatically. I get about 28-30 highway with a mild tune. Around town its about 22-25 depending on how heavy my foot is. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)
