Removing stubborn nuts with heat
Hi guys,
Anyone got experience of using a blow torch to remove rusty nuts and bolts?

On the farm I'd use the oxy acetylene bottles for big stuff but I haven't got this luxury at home. I needed it to get the front axle swivel bolts out as they are locktited in and I sheared one off as a result. I've got the other side to do this weekend and want to make an easier job of it.

Are plumbers blowtorches any good or are they just not hot enough? It's only needed a few times a year so I don't want anything that expensive.

Are there any other ways of melting loctite to remove bolts easier?

Cheers

That will do the job. I’ve used it many times for the purpose.

These also work well but are a more expensive solution:

Cheap propane torches aren't hot enough. MAP gas works a treat!

Interesting you're having trouble with swivel bolts though, mine flew out

You could always go down the oxy-propane route at home. For some reason it scares the neighbours (and insurers) less than oxy-acetylene, plus it can be moved more safely.

Also give the bolt heads a good whack with a hammer to break the loctite seal. Thumbs Up

Sometimes it doesn't take that much heat, ive even nicked the wifes "creme Brule"! mini blow torches from the kitchen, she wasnt happy but the nut came off!

A plumbers one would be ideal, also get one of those plumbers fire proof mats to place around it helps alot if there is rubber/paint nearby

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll get one bought. Good call on the heat mat to stop everything nearby getting toasted.

The swivel I did last weekend was definitely due a change after 160,000 miles -
