I hear that mate, I squint when I sit in a sideways seat on a train, or the load area seats on an SW, same goes for slams and bangs. If someone slams a door whilst I’m in bed I struggle to sleep.
I may be taking this conversation too far but I had a terrible personal experience that I won’t go into, but I would also recall this experience on the slightest thing like fires, walking though a courtyard, or even a slight breeze on my face. Had sleeping and thinking problems. Much better now though. Honestly the hardest thing I had to accept transferring to the civ div was walking around without 120lbs of gear. I’d describe it to the civs as wearing a belt, or a watch every day then leaving them at home. Or going to work stark naked without all the things you usually take with them. I find talking about this stuff is the hardest thing to do, I want people to understand how I feel, but I either go into too much or not enough detail, and come across as crude or as too emotional while it is neither. I refer to my previous post on the Remembrance Day thread which took me about an hour to type what should have taken minutes. This post is self evidence as I’ve probably spent an hour and half on it. Reflecting on the past then rescinding and rewriting to make it just right. I think talking (or writing) about these things is something people should do more, the more you bottle it up the more pressure you’re under. Being in or ex-Forces is like owning a Def. It doesn't work for all those who give it a go, but for those it does it becomes an obsession. And by most people's reckoning it's a slightly odd obsession and is not considered normal. Further it can easily bore people. I left 14 years ago, but at the height of the craziness in Iraq, which means being a recent returner, everyone wanted to know about it. As you say, where do you pitch it? Factual and cold? Emotional? Too much detail? Too little? It was before the media/charity push for more recognition or understanding of the armed forces, so there was little or no coverage, no fly-on-the-wal Ross Kemp documentaries, no public charity events, no Invictus Games or triple amputees doing crazy things for H4H. So I was often most people's only reference point, which turned every, single party, dinner, BBQ, rugby match, etc into a 'what was it like' question session. I had no issues chatting about it, people were interested and I was proud of my service, but poor Mrs Grenadier was fed up to her back teeth because she heard it over, and over again. She never said a thing, talking is cathartic, but I knew. 14 years is a long time now, actually longer out than in, so it's not discussed as much, especially with the two conflicts being behind us, but it creeps in every now and then.

Why do people just share so called tips/news etc on social media without checking it is authentic?
Latest tip on local farcebook page has had 21 shares. Thirty seconds google and the tip was found to be a false claim! Yet this so called tip has been shared 21 times from local farcebook group without comment. Hardly surprising these false claims/news are so widely spread when people can not be bothered to do the simplest bit of research! Lazy idiots just spreading false news/claims/rumours. Brendan |

I hear that gren, but i don't talk about it all that much, in fact I've only ever told one person, my ex about it and she cried about it, while i coldly and brutally told her.
On the other hand i wrote about it, a lot. I wrote up a report of what happened and the leading up to it. But i eventually wrote about everything, how i felt, and how i feel now. I wrote, Revised and re-wrote until i found my current feelings change. Said document sits in a password encrypted folder, i would actually like to publish it, but i think in some ways its too personal to share. Mind you it would be good for the future children and grandchildren when i shove off to read as to why i'm a bit of a robot, and for them to try and understand. I spoke with someone a few years ago who missed out on KFOR and former yugoslavia, they were at first dissapointed that they missed it but when the rest of the boys came back glad they did, lots of them had seen things that were pretty horrible, and they suffered from it. But i guess every generation has one of those conflicts. Korea, Oman, Burma, iraq, North west frontier... Someone shared a top "car care tips" where i live, Putting WD40 on your brakes to improve efficiency, Putting nails in your tyres for more grip, and sandpaper on your wipers to get rid of ice... the funniest thing was the comments on it after a week, "I got flat tyres" - "You need to use bigger screws" "My windscreen got scratched" "you can only used it on heated windscreens" "I crashed my car"

Yes, as a teenager I could see where that could be a problem and be a reason to mercilessly rib the kid.
Nothing as fine as that but my mates mum and dad had a 2CV with a ban the bomb sticker on it in the late 70’s. If that wasn’t a reason to take the pi$$, we’ll I don’t know what is. Poor kid. I would feel sorry for him but I think he is a Lawyer or Accountant or something and earns megabucks. Kids are cruel sods most of the time. OsloBlue, what episode was that?? |

Yes, the Allagro was a car of little merit. The 2CV was an amazing car and looking back at my Juvenile scorn, it was in fact something which should have been celebrated.
The Allegro never got put down by me and my mates. Perhaps we were laughing at the wrong car? Well, your Dad had an Allegro and mine had a Morris Marina. A 1.3 engine,no radio, no heated rear screen and vinyl seats. No power assisted or servo assisted brakes. Dad would give it 4-5 minutes notice to stop at junctions. It wallowed round corners. It had a 0-60 mph in one bank holiday weekend and it was a horrid dog sh£t orange colour. Bloody hell. Tell me why did British Leyland fail? Why did my Dad buy such an absolute heap of poo when he could have bout an MK1 Escort? As you can see Phil, I share the pain. My Dad had a Marina and I was mocking one of the finest pieces of engineering and style icon that was the 2CV. I am disgusted with myself. |
