200 tdi Alternator Problems - help please.
Hi Guys

So working on my project rebuild and I have a problem with the alternator wiring.

When we took the engine out I seem to remember it having a black wire from the top terminal in the picture below to the adjacent engine mount. I do remember thinking that needs securing better than that and took it off but never took a picture first Banging Head

Fast forward a year and I can't quite remember what went where, and I don't want to do any damage.

At the moment it starts and runs fine, but the battery light is on on the dash and I presume we are not charging the battery.

Can I reconnect a wire from that terminal to said engine mount or will that do damage? All the alternators wiring is rough and needs tiding up before the wings go back on.

I would have thought it would get its earth from the bolts holding it on to the block.

Thanks in advance. 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

The top terminal/stud with the "W" next to it is for a rev counter.

The battery light is connected to the smaller wire on the bottom set of three spades (two of which are wrapped in white tape).

The red spade with the (hopefully) BROWN with YELLOW wire is the battery warning light feed.

Your wiring has definitely been mucked about with - the proper alternator plug is missing. The two white-wrapped spades and the warning light spade should be in a proper plug: https://polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Lucas-Alte...tml#SID=53  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks guys, so the dangling wire is probably from when the alternator came from a different vehicle that had a revcounter.

Why is my battery light on permanently? If it wasn't on at all I would say a connection fault but with it on permanently I really am confused.

Much obliged for all the advice.

Cheers

OK I just wonder if the alternator is not being excited correctly on the D+ (warning light) wire and so it's taking more revs to get it to kick in and start charging.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
