I helped a friend change his a year or 3 ago, we did it with the main box in situe.

We managed (just) to get the outer casing thing off as well so access to the shaft was better, but it was a royal PITA (to get the casing off)

3/4" air gun soon had the bolt out mind!

It's curious but I don't remember having any trouble at all removing the casing round the adaptor shaft. It was a while ago but I don't think I would have forgotten if it had been a struggle. Strange!

Nice to see where the problem lies. Our 2016 90 just suffered this failure 23 months after it was builtn and only 17K.

Unfortunately ours was fixed by warranty so obviously the parts will have been replaced with the same crappy parts by what has become one of the worst Dealers in the country.

I'm still waiting in trepidation for the idiots to "fix" the missing diff lock on my 110 after they erroneously replaced the transfer box instead of the gearbox last October / November. Assume they have probably not connected the lever. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

Our 2012 2.2 output shaft failed yesterday. The original output shaft was replaced under warranty in 2015, so this one has lasted 3yrs Shocked James

Yapp. Replaced mine 5 weeks ago.
It was the original one lasted 6 yrs / 66 000 km

These shafts collapse within a few years.
Land Rover are doing such a bad job ... Crying or Very sad
Even Dacia or Lada are more reliable.

Now an Ashcroft modded shaft is inside Mr. Green

LR Palma opening mine up next week after failing whilst on holiday. Cannot believe it happened whilst away so that I have to replace with OE and not Ashcroft. Same for the clutch which I'm doing at the same time. No option to upgrade, just have to accept LR quality parts Big Cry Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I know it is tempting fate to say this (it will probably now fail) but my 2007 DC has just passed 220,000 miles and is still on its original shaft.

When I last changed the clutch (at 150,000 miles) the shaft was dry but not worn, and the two parts were a better fit than the brand new parts I had already bought ready to fit. Since the originals were better than the replacements, I cleaned the originals and reassembled them with copious grease, and a further 70,000 miles have now passed.

I will be fitting another clutch as soon as I get the chance (after 70k miles the clutch has no springiness left and is not very pleasant to drive) and it will be interesting to inspect the shaft again.

Whilst the other thread has made me remember this one ~. Did you ever get to reinspect the shaft?

Not yet, I still haven't had time yet to fit my new clutch although its top of the major jobs list as soon as the weather improves.

My Defender has now done over 243,000 miles on the original shaft, and the current clutch has been in for over 93k miles. Shocked
