It would appear that the diagnosis has already been completed upon many vehicles by a Land Rover approved retailer, mine included and that this has shown a lack of lubrication to the splines is causing the failure. This failure is occurring at a very low mileages to vehicles that are both in and out off warranty.

I think the question being asked is whether Land Rover have a satisfactory engineering cure for the problem or if we as owners are going to have to expect repeated failures over the life of the vehicles.

Yes the Ashcroft Transmissions part looks like a proper engineering solution and I would have that fitted to my transmission, but JLR have now repaired my output shaft and given a one year parts and labour warranty on the repair.

My dilema and I suspect others too, is will the shaft fail again at some point in the future or do JLR consider that the current fix is suitable for the projected life of the vehicle?

Thank you for your posts.

I note your comments and would advise that should a specific concern be identified by Land Rover, our engineering department will publish a robust fix in relation to the concern in question.

Following a diagnosis of a concern by our retailers, they will effect the relevant fix for the concern in question. However, as I hope you can appreciate we would be unable to realistically predict if a component may or may not fail in the future as our vehicles are complex working machines. For this reason, each repair would be covered by the appropriate warranty depending on the age of the vehicle. (Our parts warranty has recently been increased to two years)

I can also assure you that all records of repairs completed by our retailers are retained and can be referred back to if necessary.

I don't think this needs the engineering department on this, it just needs a small amount of grease on final assembly!
The photos on this thread, are of one of our work 110s I think that was a 12 plate model?
Over the past few months I have removed and lubricated all of our Land Rover shafts.
We have just taken delivery of another 110 and will be doing the same on that one before it fails!
I have fitted grease nipples on the last 2.

I work on heavy plant and equipment and have always gone with the saying that "grease is cheaper than metal"
I can't believe that this critical part in the Defenders drive train is still being over looked? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Where are the current Defender gearbox/transferbox assemblies actually built and/or assembled?

I imagine that they arrive at Solihull as assembled units, so the grease deficiency has its origins elsewhere.

guessing the main box and t/fer box are different makes so maybe bolted together at land rover factory

It seems that the MT82 is built at the Getrag factory in Halewood. Anyone know who/where the transfer box is built, and where the two parts become one?

We were at the factory on Wednesday, we saw the engines and gearboxes all as one unit.
So not sure if they arrive like that?

It supprised us as to what was farmed out to other company's regarding the Defender build.
Chassis, roof panels, etc all get shipped in from outside the plant, so would be interesting to know who builds the engine and box up?

I'm dropping the box out of our 5week old 110 next week, will be interesting to see if they are doing any lubrication improvements to the splined coupling? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

^^^^ That well be good to know if there is any change in greasing the joint

also any idea how long ago was the first one you greased , time/mileage etc , be interesting for a look at one thats been greased for a while for wear

i personally think there be fine once greased

my advise to anyone worried adout the shaft is to have box out to grease it before it lets you down and costs you more for parts and also the worry of when it will happen , outside lane of motorway , busy junction

its not a big job and for piece of mind , prevention is better then cure etc , shouldnt cost a fortune , unless you use main dealer

wasn't there a "how to bulletin" that said when fitting new spline parts that they should be greased

think your find that's it , that's there fix
