...happened to me this afternoon ...
I got in to the car, When I turned the key , the roof light turned off and then on, and when I turned the ignition on, the trip meter on the speedometer had been reset to zero, and the presets on my radio were gone ... Any ideas ? Could this be the beggining of troubles ? The only extras wired on my Defender are the radio, the winch (straight to the battery) and the trailer electrics (that I smashed yesterday agains a hydrant) Regards Joao '10 Land Rover Defender 110 CC '08 BMW F800GS '64 SIIA Forward Control '69 SIIA 109 ZA CKD _____________________________________________ You have the right to remain silent. could be that the resason? the feeling I got was that the conection to the battery had been interrupted for a second ... and caused that reset of the tripmeter and the radio ... ...ooops ... it did it again !!
for almost a minute it looked like my defender had no battery ... all the dashboard lights were off, with the ignition key in position to start ! :\ ... then suddenly it was allright ... just went to the electrician to fit another trailer socket ... the green wire was smashed as well as the black wire .... If this continues I'll have to take it to the dealer! anyone experienced something similar ? If it was a 12N socket then the green (Right Hand Indicator) and the black (Left Hand side Light) would only be live if the lights, indicator where on. A 12S sockets green wire (live feed) and black wire (Earth) touching would short out and blow the inline 12v fuse. On a new style 13 pin socket the green wire (Live feed) and black wire (Earth) would again short and blow the fuse. Did you check, pull the fuses after the socket was smashed? Any more info on what was switched on at the time and what type of socket it was you crushed? |

I was parking the Defender when I hit that hydrant ... It was a 7 pin socket ... the only thing turned on was the radio at the time ...
Did not chek the fuses because everything is working ... all lights, indicators, radio, AC ... nothing seems to be wrong ! I've tightned the nuts on the battery, but they seemed OK ... When this happened again this afternoon the starter engine did give a sign before the blackout .... but as all the dashboard light were out don't think that was the problem ... If it was the starter engine I would have lights on the dash wouldn't I ? I'm starting to get nervous about this ... Well ... I had repaired the tow socket and believed that the problem was fixed ...
But it happened again ... I turn the ignition and and have no lights on the dashboard, the car doesn't start, and canot even close it with the remote ... Checked the battery, fuses and everything is OK ... Suddenly, I turn the key on again, after four or five times, and everything is normal .... the car starts perfectly ... Could be something wrong with the imobiliser ? Could be the wiring to the winch, radio ? This has happened alway after I use the remote, usually when unlocking the car ... Did anyone experienced anything similar ? I'm going to book the service (1yr/20000km - in my case one year) next week .... I wanted to have some ideas on how to explain and or ask them to check ... I'd check the battery earth as suggested. Get looking under the passenger seat!

I've checked all that ... everything is tighten. Checked all the fuses on the right and left side. The tow socket was replaced ... As far as I can see the wiring to the winch is intact .... I believe that it could have something to see with the imobiliser .... because this always happens after I unlock the car ... Could be Regards Joao '10 Land Rover Defender 110 CC '08 BMW F800GS '64 SIIA Forward Control '69 SIIA 109 ZA CKD _____________________________________________ You have the right to remain silent.
