Hi all.
So this has come from no where, fine 1 minute the next thing I know - driving as normal lift off the throttle I get a massive bang and judder from somewhere towards the front and the truck feels as though it's going to break in half. Doesn't do it with the clutch pushed in or on the power. Any thoughts? Cheers Rich |

I'd go with a prop UJ too. they are the weakest point.

It's not the UJ,s. It's way to harsh for that. The whole truck feels like it's jumping in the air ( I know it's not, before someone kindly points it out

Possible, but if it were it'd most likely be bang bang judder all stop no drive. Certainly when mine went it pretty much bought the rear wheel off the ground and threw my passenger and I hard against the seat belts. Was only doing 30 mph as well.
If you do think it might be the front diff get yourself a telescopic pen magnet (the sort of thing used to retrieve lost washers or screws) undo your diffs filler plug and go fishing for shrapnel. If the diff is eating itself you will find shards, lots of them. |

I'd wager the uj, if they get really worn they can almost snatch on themselves, just before the flailing prop shoots through the aluminium floor...! Pop it out n neutral, handbrake off, couple of bricks to stop rolling forward and give the props a good shake around. Bet it's your front diff one..

It does sound a bit like mine before the front diff went completely, with mine I reckon it was when the broken part of the pin dropped out and caught in the planetary gears but got spat out of the way. A little later the rest of the pin dropped out and when the planetary gears dropped that's when it came to a sudden stop......... in the middle of the busiest road in Hereford in the evening rush hour.
Granted I got away with dropping the front prop off as both front half shafts weren't connected to the planetary gears as they'd dropped out and could freewheel quite happily, the prop flange however was wedged solid. |

Is there any shrapnel in the front diff oil?

There are several different failure modes when the front diff fails. When mine failed, the differential locked solid but the crownwheel and pinion did not, so the only immediate effect was a near total inabiliy to steer. If the pinion and crownwheel also lock, you will get bangs, shudders, possibly a near immediate stop, possibly a catastrophic halfshaft or even propshaft failure. If the crownwheel disintegrates, you may get destructive noises and loss of drive, probably with a loss of steering as well.
The fact that your vehicle remains drivable (you say it doesn't do it with the clutch dipped or on power) makes me think propshaft UJ is more likely in this case. Any defect which causes this severe an effect should be easy enough to find though. |
