Crunching Noise And Traction Control Light Flashes
Good Morning,

I was wondering if anybody could shed any light on an intermittent problem I have been experiencing on and off for a short while, sometimes when engaging 1st gear when pulling away a get a brief crunching noise from transmission, and at the same time the TC light flashes with it, then goes out and all seems to be fine, just a note it has happened also when selecting reverse gear, same symptons. It seems to be happening on a more regular basis at the moment, not sure if it is related I seem to have more than the usual backlash in the transmission at the moment, which I mentioned to my dealer, and they said their technician had indicated it was within LR tolerances.

Thanks in advance.

Keith

sounds like shaft splines worn or possibly even a broken shaft..

I've had them shear in such a way that you can still drive through them until under a lot of load.. so pulling off in 1st gear the shafts will be under the most load..

I guess it must be on an individual axle/ wheel and not gearbox related.. if it was the gear box I don't thing the TC light would light up.. (I could be wrong), but assuming they use the ABS sensors and if one wheel moves at different speed to the others it lights the TC light?

certainly worth pulling out the rear shaft (as they are the easiest, then, maybe try it on a hill with and without the diff lock in, its always good to try and control a problem so you know exactly when its going to happen, this can help narrow down the options..

Good Luck and let us know how you get on. My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey Smile 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now

re reading your post, are you sure its not just the noise of the TC working? they can make an odd noise while the TC is operating.. find a slippery grassy hill and test, leave it in high range no diff lock and test your TC.. My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Exactly the same with me (and others). No explanation available, but mine does it occasionally but regular from the beginning. But no faults or other issues related to that...

When the Defender Traction Control is working (correctly) it does make a real nasty sounding grinding noise. It was one of the things which was highlighted on the half day Land Rover Experience. I am glad it was pointed out as I would have probably thought the thing was broken. Possibly why they highlight it. Saves the Dealers after sales department all the hassle of explaining there's nothing wrong.

check for chaffing of cables, especially the ones that come from the wheel sensors, this would short out and activate the ABS. Theres been a few cases of this, the loom runs underneath the vehicle on the passenger side.

I doubt it is any form of driveline spline failure since TC cannot help you drive out of that.

Intermediate shaft splines worn?
When I would select 1st and pull off I would have a grinding noise. I would only have the same noise when I selected reverse and spun the shaft the other way. As time went on, this got much worse where any forward gear after a change would grind and you would feel it. Eventually it went completely - no drive.
Just something to think about.

if it is just TC working i would question why its coming on on pulling away anyway.

broken CV or shaft is my guess.

does it off road much, large tyres? Cheers

I had this after the dealer renewed one swivel seal. Pulling away normally would initiate the TC coming on, took it straight back and it was simply that he had dislodged the wheel speed sensor, only by a fraction but it was enough. He re-seated the sensor and bingo! Back to normal.

I was also getting the TC light flickering and associated crunching noises occasionally on my Td5 90 when I first got it, mainly at low speed on a bumpy road, the odd thing was though that the radio would momentarily go off at the same time, turned out to be nothing more complicated than a loose earth connection on the bulkhead (loose securing nut) where they both share a common earth point.
