2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 SW Indus Silver
VIN - Class W (extra heavy duty) Defender 90
Hi, after trying to decode my VIN (SALLDW....) with the workshop manual, I've found out that my MY14 Defender 90 seems to be a 90 inch Extra heavy duty one. Does anybody know what in this case "extra heavy duty" means or if there are even any standard ones (for the 90: SALLDV...) around?
Apart from the heavy duty rims, everything seems to be pretty standard to me....

Early XS Pumas had HD suspension as standard that gave a 1" lift over standard. Have you spoke to your dealer? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Jep, I've got it new from my dealer but it was already preconfigured and I highly doubt that they selected any HD specs as I would definitely have had to pay for that.
As for now I haven't contacted my dealer about it.... Wink

Have a look at your chassis. If it has a continuous plate welded top and bottom along the entire length then it is probably a HD version.

Ether way its the better way round to be! Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I have a 2014MY 90 SW. It was bought pre-registered from a dealer, built April 2014, but not registered till september, and then bought by me in feb of this year with a very hefty discount. I could never get a straight answer from the dealer about it, its an odd spec, being a base spec that has been specced up to almost county spec, minus a few bits and pieces.

My chassis number begins SALLDW..... noticed it a while back but never really thought about it, all previous have been SALLDV...

have just had a look underneath and it seems to look the same as other defender chassis I've owned, the main rails being formed from two C sections welded top and bottom.

I can though see the sticker from GKN Autostructures on the chassis, no mention of it being heavy duty.

It should be pretty much the same for me...unfortunately I can't read the sticker anymore because of the heavy duty rust proofing Very Happy

I can't read mine either anymore, thanks to rustproofing, but I'm a nerd so I photographed all of the part number stickers on the defender when I first got it.

I asked a similar question a while ago http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39672.html

The owners manual refers to HD versions in various specification tables, but as of yet I haven't got a clue what the difference is. It seems "HD" is actually "standard" at least for XS`SW.

edited because link didn't seem to work, even though it looked correct?

The topic about the vin of the 2,000,000 Defender was my reason to ask this question in the first place, too. Very Happy Quite strange that they even mention the extra heavy duty in the workshop manual then. Probably another Land Rover thing we are not supposed to understand. Anyhow thanks a lot for your responses. Thumbs Up

Mine was ordered standard as well, but came HD. Checked it and found: chassis frame with some additional strengthening, HD springs, Wolf rims - mechanics suspected it was a frame originally aimed for some kind of military use. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

@NinetyTD4: That sounds quite interesting. Could you possibly post some information about the reinforced chassis frame in this topic: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39672-15.html Thumbs Up
There we're currently collecting information about what the "extra heavy duty" actually means. As for now, we identified HD springs and vented front brakes as possible identification properties.
