Strange clunk noise possibly in fuel tank

'06 TD5 90---

We have an annoying dull clunk, coming from the rear of the truck. The local indy has checked all the suspension bushes and all seems okay. The clunk appears/sounds like it is coming from inside the fuel tank !!!!!!, you cannot force the clunk to sound of by throwing the the truck about (swinging it from side to side), its just random.

This is the second time this noise has put in an appearance, seems to happen after the tank is filled to max. I have just cut an inspection panel in the floor to access the pump, as were both sure its in the tank !!!.

Any thoughts any one ?????

Well the clunk is still apparent,just moved the truck around on the drive, dropped of the drive(one inch drop onto the highway) and there it was, ,same when I came back on, this was a tick over ,just moving the truck around.(forward/reverse), even checked the mudflaps to see if they were loose!!!!!!,checked for loose cables !!!.

Still a mystery, will see what happens and then pull the the intank pump.

Indy checked this as that was first thought, and crowbared it, with no apparent play, but I think I may get it replaced just to eliminate it.

Do you have a rear anti roll bar ? Anti roll bar bushes and drop links are a common source of knocks/clunks on most cars 2005 Td5 90 XS

Yes ,have anti roll bars front and rear, all bushes checked, levered or removed(split bushes) to visually check for wear..

I know this sounds daft but have you been underneath and given the exhaust a good waggle?

Other than that the rear A frame joint would be my guess, you don't need a crowbar on it see if it's worn, with the vehicle on the ground get someone to rock the wheels at 3 and 9 o'clock as if you are checking wheel bearing play, this will show play in the a-frame, also with the handbrake applied rock vehicle back and forth while laying under neath and you should see any movement present and this will also show play in the link arms too.

Yours isn't that old though, is the fuel tank loose somewhere? Can you move it from underneath with your hands?

Exhaust secure and no contact with chassis or tank, tank is also secure. Think we will go down the elimination route, as looking through old receipts this evening, the A frame joint has not been replaced. Shocks and bushes replace a few months ago ( Bilsteins) .

All the rear suspension bushes were checked and appeared to be okay,truck was on the lift all appeared to be okay, mechanic,owner /sole employee , who we have used for years, also could hear the clunk on a test drive( L/Rs are his business)

I had a similar clunk a while back that I couldnt trace, it was at the very back and sounded like from underneath, I checked everything like you have, shocks, bushes etc, it turned out to be the bolts holding the latch on the rear door had worked loose, so I removed the door card, put 4 new nylock nuts on and it stopped straight away, it might be something simple.

Hi Lambley.

Think you might have put me on the track. Always checked the door hinges for play when fully open, and no play. Door all most closed play really noticeable. I have packed out the lower door edge nearest the latch side with a cleaning cloth, so see what happens .(spare on rear door!!!!!)

Ok, make sure you check the latch that's attached to the back door, the brass coloured part, mine was loose, it's held to the door with 4 nuts.
My spare is on a swing away carrier, it might be worth removing your spare and going for a drive without it.

I had similar, change of ball joint sorted, despite no apparent slack on the lifts - it apparently is under less tension on the flat than when up on the lift…? That's what I got told anyway, and as its sorted I'm inclined to believe it!!
