Aldi and Lidl do very cheap metric sets occasionally.
Alternatively, take an HTS bolt and file a section at the end similar to those on a tap. Zinc is a soft metal, it should do the job.  |

Does anyone know if Wedge can take the items like rear step as is and do the whole stripping and then Galving in one go to come back to refit?
I don't mind painting myself once galved but I don't really want to strip it all myself nor go various places to get it done, I don't mind drilling box section and removing plastic caps etc though in advance. Not only that if I stripped it at home rust will set in before it'd even get sent. Later in the year when a bit of spare £ is available I shall have to contact them.. Do you mean stripping the whole thing tread and all or just the coating off it?
If its just the paint/ powdercoating give them a call. Mine will but it costs a bit extra (a NAS bumper will be about £20 probably to have blasted before galvanizing so I wouldnt loose any sleep over the cost  )
Its worth doing though, im going to do the same once I get my next one with sidesteps and bits, Ill be taking new ones to have done straight away (powdercoating doesn't like where I live much apparently) When you say about it rusting if left outside once stripped. It will but at such a slow rate if stored off the ground it will only be surface rust, so no issue for galvanizing or long term strength. Cheers Tom  Defender puma dormobile camper |

When I say stripped, obviously I'd remove any plastic caps and chequer plate and the like, I just meant the powder coat stripping basically.
I will have to do this this year I think, just get the pennies together now.  ____\We|Will|Win/___

Before dipping a mild steel component in the hot zinc bath - it needs to be very clean (no flaking, scale, rust, remains of paint/plastic etc) - usually shot-blasted and pickled/acid bath.

Have been updating myself on powder coating technology with a visit to a supplier of powder coated components to the automotive sector. Met with the tech guru and toured the process from start to finish.
Oh the joys of quality and pricing issues - and the longevity of the finished coated components. So what did I learn - all about the short cuts and where some folk apparently cut corners. What did I already know - unless the preparation is really thorough and quality powders are applied correctly - that lovely looking surface will soon just peel and flake off. |
