1997 Ex-MOD 110 restoration + Alu Cab pop top
Hi everybody.
Thought I’d document the work on the new to me Defender.

It’s an Ex-MOD 1997 300tdi 110 Hardtop with 70k miles. It was based at RAF Wittering and used by 85 Expeditionary Logistics Wing, the Raven? on the door is on their badge.

It was de-mobbed in 2013 and bought by a family friend off Withams, I bought it off them in February.
My plan was to run it as it is and freshen it up slowly as and when needed.
However...my plans have changed! After giving it a good look over it is pretty decent condition overall with some Ali surface corrosion and the chassis is solid but does have some rust which really needs catching now before it gets any worse.
So my plan is to fully strip it, galvanise the original chassis and rebuild it with any new parts needed.
Having done this once before to a 1989 110 CSW I kinda know what bits I could buy in advance, all new springs, shocks, bushes, bearings etc and then obviously any bits found whilst stripping down that need replacing.
I hope to get started on it soon once I’ve caught up with jobs around the house to keep the wife happy!

Couple of upgrades I’ve done already whilst using it, JVC head unit with reverse camera for hitching up and an Optimill steering boss, lock and Momo wheel.

Thanks!

My aim is to give it a fresh look but also a nod back to its military history.
Current thoughts are Land Rover Willow Green in a very light textured Raptor satin coat.
Struggling to get the willow green matched without the metallic in it currently but visiting my paint supplier again once they are fully open. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

Couple of pictures of the 1989 CSW I did back in 2013 after a nut and bolt restoration, original chassis galvanised and 300tdi+R380 fitted.

Hi, thanks!

Yes definitely, the bonnet spare is staying and obviously it’s not a WOLF but I’ve got a brand new shovel, pick axe and tow strop to fit on Thumbs Up 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

Thanks.
The bonnet is heavy to lift for sure but it looks great up there and saves the rear door issues.
I’m just hoping with the larger tyre fitted plus the tools it’s not too heavy else I’ll be fitting a helper ram! 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

You could always put them on the wings instead like a Camel?

Yes, that’s an option, will try it out before fitting!
Although against a wolf wheel and large tyre the pick axe handle and shovel probably won’t make that much difference Very Happy
A couple of gas struts would just give a helping hand. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

I wonder if the army still have many of these left in service. I know they kept the 300 TDI a long side the TD5 for the ease of fix in the field. Thumbs Up
Looks like its had a easy life that one, some i have seen have been well used. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Withams always seem to have at least dozen different types for sale, but yeah, not sure actually how many are left in service now.
It only had 30k on it and quite straight when de-mobbed so a fairly easy life. I’ve been told by a mechanic who worked at RAF Wittering that they had a fleet of these in just the Land Rover green (possibly Coniston) which mine is underneath and they were all sprayed NATO green? to send to Iraq, wether mine actually made it to Iraq I’m not sure! 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html
