Looks like its had a easy life that one, some i have seen have been well used.

The army never used the TD5 in general service. The Wolf is a 300tdi. Darren

yeah, I was told from my mams work mate who used to be in the army, He had a tidy defender but sold it before i bought my 1st one. He came over to show my mam his new "merc" it more like he wanted to see the TD5 Whistle he said to me that the TD5 was only used for ferrying people around the local camp, and mainly used in the air force around camp. So they were on very light duties, compared to the wolf ones that used to get it. He said the TD5 had to many electrics to be out there in the field. He said they had changed a 300 Tdi engine in the field. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Withams always seem to have at least dozen different types for sale, but yeah, not sure actually how many are left in service now.
It only had 30k on it and quite straight when de-mobbed so a fairly easy life. I’ve been told by a mechanic who worked at RAF Wittering that they had a fleet of these in just the Land Rover green (possibly Coniston) which mine is underneath and they were all sprayed NATO green? to send to Iraq, wether mine actually made it to Iraq I’m not sure!

Strong chance it may have gone out there for a small stint, or it was on standby at the very least. Thumbs Up
Shame they don't say what it was used for in the army, i do wonder if land rover should have kept these in production for the uk army only. Because if the army found the TD5 and puma having to many electrics, they are going to find the new defender a right old nightmare! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I think in the 110 van style they were just used a generic all purpose run-a-round.

Don’t think there’s any fear of the MOD buying any of the new Defenders!! 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

Made a start on the strip down today!

Gonna be needing some parts for the 8274, any recommendations for Warn parts suppliers in the UK?

Think I’ll modify the winch bumper so it’s not necessary to cut the front panel. Moving the tray out by 60mm should do it, the grill will still need to be cut obviously.

Doors off revealed the bulkhead still nice and solid thankfully!

Will be fitting just a standard tow bar, hate the rattling DB sliders!

Land Rover Willow Green with a fine Raptor finish, dull in the shade but glistens in the sun.

I can't think of any reason why the MOD would consider even for a second bulk buying the new Defender, since all the attributes that made the old one attractive and useful have been removed. They'll probably buy one or two for specific purposes, but hundreds, can't see that happening.

There's no role even for TUL any more.

Thanks jrule, I’ll take a look.

Managed to get a bit more done today after work.

Slow progress, but now down to a bare chassis. Work always gets busy when I’ve got a project on!!
Dropped it off to get it shot blasted today, hopefully will get done sometime next week if it stops raining!

Change of plan with the galvanising unfortunately. Seems most companies now won’t do used/old chassis due to being claimed against too many times for them twisting after being dipped. I’ve found a couple of companies willing to do it but at double the normal cost so I’ve decided to paint it instead.

Thanks.
I much prefer to keep the original chassis with matching VIN number plus the price of new chassis of £3000+ was way not budgeted for in the build!
I’m happy that with the paint I’m using and good dose of waxoyl on the inside it will last for a good long while. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

I was going on the price of a Marsland chassis, but yes there are cheaper ones, I don’t know enough about any of them to know the good or bad ones!! 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html

Few more bits stripped down.

Original clutch being replaced along with new crank seal. New timing belt and water pump to go on.

Rear axle stripped and found in worse condition than I thought.

Calipers seized, stub axles worn and the diff was locking up slightly. Found the pinion bearings to be worn so all stripped out and new bearings bought. Will rebuild it after being blasted now so it can be cleaned out better.

Front axle now stripped, new swivel balls, bearings and stub axles on their way! Thankfully the calipers are ok!

Think we’ve decided to turn it into a camper, after selling our caravan last year were missing going away in it and although the wife will have to ditch 95% of the stuff she normally takes due to space it’s doable I think. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html
