Frozen locks are a problem if you live in a place that is wet and windy in the winter - something about the Defender push buttons seems to capture freezing rain between the moving parts. All vehicles that I service get the silicon spray treatment to the door seals each year (I live in a high-ozone area near the coast, so rubber and plastic deterioration is something wicked) and silicon grease to the push buttons around their periphery.

No other car I have come across seems as susceptible to freezing rain causing the push buttons to freeze. The size of gaps betwixt button and handle don't help. This is one area where the Defender was a retrograde step to the Sers. Landies, as I have to keep a Sers.III with lift-up handles on standby in the winter for this specific reason. Never had a problem getting into a Sers., just climb through the door gaps! Rolling with laughter Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Guess the mechanism's not amenable to retrofitting lifting handles to a Defender?

Looking forward to the first winter .. will stock up and see what happens Smile 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

Not without a major bit of cutting to the door skins. I have learned to appreciate as well the luxury of not having a howling gale whistling through the door at waist height when you are motoring along on a long journey - one of the many problems on the Sers. due to corrosion where the door handle aperture holds water. Just the same way as my Defender has rusted on the rear door!!!! Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

The door seals are somewhat exposed,no wonder they freeze so easily.FYI, I've always used Halfords own brand silicon spray, used it on mi motorbikes through the winter commute,I tried a few different brands before I settled on Halfords, by far it was the longest lasting, just don't get it on your tyres or brakes and has been mentioned, you'll get lynched if you contaminate a bodyshop with silicon.

From the AA (http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/seasonal/winter-checklist.html)

Quote:
Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.

The vaseline (or polish, for that matter) doesn't seem like such a bright idea, but hey.

Is it paranoid to take the seals out before spraying them with silicone spray? 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

If you are worried about silicon oil getting everywhere, spray a bit on a cloth and then use that to wipe onto the seal, carefully avoiding the paintwork. Much less hassle than trying to fit the seals back in the door aperture again! Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
