Tdi auto
I see more and more people are building challenge vehicles and road vehicles with auto boxes, apart from personnel preference, what are the advantages of auto,s over a standard manual box.
I am looking to re engine a 90 with a 300 tdi which I will use for a spot of off roading and launching the boat and was considering an auto.
Any input would be appreciated,

I converted my 300tdi to auto using the kit from Ashcrofts and really love it. Changes the whole experience, but it does come down to personal preference. I really like auto's, especially in Landrovers. Off road/in snow it is particularly good as you can put down the power more smoothly.

Really is just down to what you prefer though.

Not that I have one but the main advantage of an automatic transmission is that it significantly reduces shock load to the rest of the transmission. Not that it will never break a diff but is way kinder. Also you are always in the right gear and shifting can also be done without the same drop in power and associated loss of momentum of a manual box. Generally they are just better. Ok engine braking is less pronounced but if you know that and drive accordingly it is not a problem. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I've got no problems with an auto, as long as the vehicle has the power so as to not affect performance.
I have NO experience with an auto in a Landrover, so this is just a question, right?,...but surely with the relatively small power output of a Defender diesel, wouldn't the on road performance/acceleration/overtaking be affected?
Cheers, Pickles.

I can't directly speak for a 300 but the Discovery had a 300 auto and the weight is about the same so would'nt performance be similar?

Could you also undertake the pump tweaK? BM52

How clever are the auto boxes that can be retrofitted into defenders nowadays?

Because any modern auto box will change at a range of different revs, skip gears, use torque converter to always stay on the power when overtaking etc, but can imagine transplant boxes aren't that clever maybe?

I'm some ways a good auto feels more torquey and powerful than a manual because it never sits in the wrong gear like we do in our manuals out of laziness, it will happily drop down 1-2 gears to overtake. / accelerate Cheers, David
Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8.

We've never had a manual Defender - currently mine is an auto Td5 (home built).

The gearbox is the electronic ZF, purchased from Ashcrofts. To adapt gear changes to revs/speeds/personal preferences we have a Compushift box to adjust the settings. We have it just about right now, but it took a few attempts to get it there, and I think there are still a couple of spots where an extra tweak might be in order. But it drives well.... Other half can explain it better if he comes by this thread... Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I am going back to a manual from an Auto in the Ibex.

I have suffered from loss of drive with an Auto at silly angles, not on a Land Rover ZF, but a GM4L80e.

Most of the challenge truck autos used are 4 speed instead of the manual 5spd. Fine on a challenge only truck - stings performamce on road.

But then again most people call me strange havings jumped from a D4 HSE into a Def 110 XS SW, which spends all its time on road or very light duty offroad!

Mark.

I've heard about the GM4L80E....That is a VERY strong gearbox, takes a lot of grunt, some of the V8 Commodore drivers over here have done the conversion on cars making 600HP plus, & big torque.
Cheers, Pickles.
