Engine oil - suck or drain?
Just wondering whos does what, I have always drained but I am told that sucking is gaining over draining and some manufacturers may delete the drain plug.. Shocked

If you do 'suck' which suction thingy do you use? BM52

I've been wondering about this too, at the moment I drain it after an engine flush but hesitant if I was to suck I might miss some? Anyway I was looking at this -

Main dealers suck (pun intended) for ease as the old oil goes straight out to a bulk container ready for collection,no mess in the workshop no handling "hazardous" waste and no time spent removing undertrays etc.I prefer to drain as the flow of nice warm oil drags all the crud out of the sump. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I prefer drain. The sump plug on by tdci focus needs replacing every few years so it's always a good idea to check the seal when you remove it.

Not all main dealers suck, my local main dealer will only drain. You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

The only thing I have against these suction pumps is that if you remove the pipe out of the dipstick tube whilst the pump is still sucking it looses its suction and oil goes all over your engine but its just a matter of making sure the pump has stopped sucking before you remove the pipe Smile Graham

I prefer the method of get the engine nice and warm and then drop the oil with the drain plug. Having a difflock drain plug helps. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I've got a German badged one identical to that and found it pretty good. I've even used it to fill the gearbox with a measured amount of fresh oil, as there is no level plug, and the filler is tricky to get to with a one litre 'squeeze bottle'. I've also used it on lawn mowers and other motors and had no problems so far.

So - it is looking like Defender owners are not a bunch of suckers then Confused

I do like the look of the Femco drain plug, noted for when I next change the oil as from then on I take over the servicing as it will be nearly 4 years old. I change the oil in July before the French trip and I'd like to say I didn't spill one drop Whistle BM52

Spit or swallow Neutral

Wouldn't sucking cause any bits of metal to be sucked up through the engine?

I'm guessing all the various main dealers I've used have drained - as I've always had a new sump washer on the bill but then I've nearly always been charged for screenwash when I always brim it before taking it in Laughing

Sucking usually involves a long tube being inserted through the dip stick tube down into the sump, so that shouldn't be a problem. Darren
