I have one permanently mounted in another vehicle which works on the hand pump principle:

Suck or drain?
Tried the suck thing on my Hummer (replaced with a 90 ) it left almost two pints of oil in the sump. I removed two sump guards and drained it properly lot of crap in the remaining oil. Not to mention stuck to the magnetic sump plug. Sometimes the old ways are the best Neutral Just my 3hapence worth.

Ressurected ...

My new 110 is approaching 6 months since the last service so i will be changing the oil. I may well change the filter as well.

So - I thought I would ask what the current thinking is on here regarding a full drain or whether you suck the oil out at the 6 month change; assuming you do change every 6 months

I cannot think of any circumstances at all under which I would opt to suck the oil out rather than drain it, and if I found that a dealer had used that method at a service there would be a "scene" and the service desk.

The only possible argument for sucking I can see is that it is quicker and requires less skill to do, neither of which is good for the car or the owner.

There is a 'target issue' when draining...but when you have worked this out, with a warmed engine, filler cap off (to allow the air in easily)...when it's out...it's out, (apart from the residual coating left within the engine) at least you know you have drained it.

I also wouldn't want to disturb any small metal fragments, attached to a magnetic drain plug (if fitted).

I hear (admittedly not from direct experience) that sucking the oil out, can result in some being left in...so not ideal... Exclamation

Also, even with the Defender being higher off the ground than most vehicles, there is still a need to raise the vehicle to remove the oil filter (easily) so why not drain it at the same time... Question SKIP

Marine installations? I drilled the hull to get to the sump, but my engine didn't have a drain plug.

Shocked Oh dear, that must have been very frustrating!

I should have said that I can't think of any circumstances when I'd suck the oil out of my Defender or other road vehicle engine!
