DJ,

My understanding is as long as the extra driving lights dip as you explained and are 55/65 wattage filaments they are road legal. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Yes and No. Yes to the lights on an A bar or the roof however the way in which they are switched is a legal side. I believe front mounted spots may be wired using the main beam as a switch or a switch or a combo of both. However roof mounted spots I understand have to be switched only and NOT switched on or of by using main beam on the stalk.

**Correct any detail if anyone thinks it is wrong. As I mention this is my understanding Thumbs Up

Auxilliary lights (spots) must be wired such that they only come on with main beam and go off when returning to dipped beam. With a few specific proviso's, it doesn't matter where they're mounted - roof, A bar, bumper, etc. You can have a separate switch to prevent them coming on, but not one to switch them on independantly.

You can, in theory, have as many auxilliary lights as you like in this arrangement.

It's fairly logical - main beam is for use when there's nobody in front of you, so it doesn't matter how bright it is. Dipped beam is for use when facing or following another car and so is specifically controlled. Darren

in which case, as my friends 100w driving lights only came on with the main beam then yes, they are legal. it was never an issue come MOT time (about the only thing that wasnt!) 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Taken from vehicle lighting regulations 1989

(Regulations 18 and 20)
SCHEDULE 5

PART I
Requirements relating to obligatory main-beam headlamps and to optional main-beam headlamps to the extent specified in part ii

Quote:

8. Wattage–

(a) A motor vehicle, other than a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination, first used on or after 1st April 1986:

No requirement
(b) A motor vehicle, other than a solo motor bicycle or a motor bicycle combination, first used before 1st April 1986:

30 watts minimum
(c) A solo motor bicycle and a motor bicycle combination–

(i)having an engine not exceeding 250 cc: 15 watts minimum
(ii)having an engine exceeding 250 cc: 30 watts minimum
9. Intensity:

No requirement

ALSO

Quote:

PART II
Requirements relating to optional main-beam headlamps

Any number may be fitted and the only requirements prescribed by these Regulations in respect of any which are fitted are those specified in paragraphs 7, 10 and 12(a) of Part I and, in the case of a motor vehicle first used on or after 1st April 1991, paragraph 5 of Part I.

So unless I have missed something you can have as many as you like and of megawattage us long as they are wired correctly and are correctly marked they are road legal.

HOWEVER just because the megawatt lights you have fitted are road legal it does not mean they are always legal to use

Highway code

Quote:

114
You MUST NOT
use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders

Am not sure what the actual offence would be if your megawattage lights dazzled oncoming traffic. Driving without due care and consideration possibly rising to dangerous driving if your megawatt lights blinded oncoming traffic to such an extend that a collision/incident occurred.

Whilst driving my Defender in nasty conditions this morning, there was the usual bunch of muppets with front fogs AND dip beam at the same time (which as we know is incorrect)...

Then I had a thought....my rear fog only comes on when main/dip beam is selected (NOT on sidelights).

As you;re supposed to use front fogs with sidelights (to reduce reflected glare)...do you need to somehow change the vehicle wiring so that the rear and front fogs can be used with sidelights (and not dip beam)????? Anyone done this??? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

On my parents Range Rover, the front fogs will come on with side lights and so will the rears but the front fogs have to be on first before the rears will come on. i.e you cant drive on sidelights and rear fogs only. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

For use on the highway the aux lights would also need to be ECE approved which is a drive type pattern so no spots I am afraid
