Long term diesel storage
I was wondering if somebody ever wanted to store diesel fuel in the usual 200lt barrels what would be the "life span" of the fuel itself so that it could be used to run the Puma engine?

Considering the following:

1) The barrels would be filled to the top to avoid condensation as much as possible
2) The barrels would be placed outdoors but under a covered area with temperatures from -10 to +30 deg. C and no direct rain, snow or sunlight.

I hope I get some answers from the experts here Thumbs Up because I might decide to store some for future use.

Cheers,

Mike

It depends on what type of diesel you are storing. I'll leave it to the experts to comment but my understanding is that the later type of diesel is not so good for storing because of the higher bio content. Certainly with inboard boat engines and fuel that are left for 4-5 months during the winter plenty of stabilizing additive is needed to prevent diesel bug. Marine diesel is different again though to forecourt stuff!

Farmers do it so there must be a way depending on the type of diesel!

The type of diesel is automotive (The normal one sold in every fuel station).

You'd need a bud to catch fuel if it leaked - or by a double skinned tank instead of the barrels www.highspeed.co.uk/bunded-fuel-tanks

Diesel storage shouldn't be a problem but as with any mixture of chemicals it will start to separate as it settles in the tank.
The only other issue you will have is the fuel will expand and contract with the heat and you can get condensate gathering at the top of the barrel, but you also need to leave an air gap for the fluid to expand and contract with the heat.

If you are worried you should keep the fuel agitated every so often.

What every you do do not try and store the Shell fuel saver diesel. Russell

Well their fuel doesn't work every well in the winter
People have had to drain tanks and replace fuel filters due to the additives being put in

Not necessarily, in Greece their Health & Safety rules may differ pertaining bunds.....

During the fuel crisis I too stored fuel in 2 fifty gallon drums I always worried about insurance implications if it did go up. Don't think I'd do it again, too many sleepless nights. Whistle If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Thank you for your help folks,

To sum it up I keep in mind the following:

1. The barrels must be filled to the top in order to avoid any condensation but not totaly full in order to have place for air expansion.
2. Great care must be taken not to hit the barrel and cause any leakage because the rules here are the same as in the UK.
3. Better to avoid Shell fuel saver due to the additives so I will go for BP or some local brand.
4. Must agitate the fuel from time to time.

Is that all?

Mike.

Why not get a proper storage tank (1100 litres) with a filler hose and nozzle? I have had one for years without any bother. Also the diesel comes in a bit cheaper when bought in bulk, especially before price increases. It is also very convenient as you can top up any time. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
