Problems with Central Locking
Hi All!

When my Defender drowned many moons ago and due to dwindling budget to resurrect him, I had to replace the central lock motors (gear blunted their teeth when they keep running after being submerged) with Japanese / Taiwanese lock motors which worked well enough and was cheap enough to replace when one would burn out every now and then.

I recently saved up enough and did a total rebuild of my truck. I bought but not yet fitted original LR lock motors since the oriental ones were still working. Shortly after driving around in my rebuilt truck, all was well until a few weeks ago when every now and then the truck would lock itself when parked, engine off. Luckily, have a spare that works (there are many keys now due to changes in one bit or another way back when) so now keep it with me, just in case. It never did this before.

I brought it to a buddy with an electrician and they replaced a few actuators that for some reason, went kaputt. Still no bueno. It was then suggested that the AS10 module did not like working with oriental actuators and that original ones were needed. I then proceeded to install the original LR ones I got and things worked well after a few adjustments. Had to reshape the driver door rod that connects the actuator with the mechanism as the oriental ones were taller. A few clips to secure the rods were replaced as some went missing for some reason. All was well, or so I thought.

In the past few days, the door lock peg on the driver's door would half lock (lock the driver's door but not engage the whole system to lock the other doors) when you closed the door. I could alway pull it up from the rear door but it's a pain and not the way things are supposed to be. When checking the door lock peg, I noted that it was limp with hardly any resistance to keep it tall and proud. My electrician said that maybe we could lubricate a few key points but I'm doubting that will help. Will try anyway.

Last night, while driving, the doors would unlock on their own! Shocked I would lock them and after a while, they would unlock again. Strange becoming more strange. Was thinking of bringing him to a priest but I don't think we're there yet Rolling with laughter

Looking through the threads, lubricating parts seem to help some so my electrician was on to something and am going to give it a go tomorrow. I live in the Asian Pacific region at the moment so it's definitely not a frozen or iced over lock.

Anyone have other ideas on what else the problem could be? Could it be a defective driver side actuator? Something I could adjust? Or maybe nothing a few splashes of Holy water couldn't fix?

Suggestions, advice, recommendations, and prayers all welcome.

Thank you in advance! No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

Did the 10AS unit get wet when you “Drowned” your Defender ? You can remove it, open it up and look to see if the relays or other circuitry have any water damage. Also check the loom connectors and the 10AS connectors to ascertain if there is any corrosion.

Hi Ianh,

Luckily, the 10AS is still good and no corrosion. I was considering replacing it with the Remote Key UK version but seeing as my budget was dwindling and that the current 10AS was still in good condition, I opted to defer the acquisition of the Remote Key kit for later. Definitely fancy their all in one FOB and key kit. Thumbs Up

Will see about the lubricating and cleaning the joints to see if that has an effect. Maybe even make up a longer rod to help keep the locking peg up? Will it make a difference if I flip the actuator around? They seem made to be mounted one way or the other, not upside down, of course Laughing No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

Lubricating all the locks and mechanisms will help, when I had issues with actuators not locking the doors in winter it was the second row door mechanisms needing a good lube and freeing up.
If your starter battery is low or old and not holding a good charge then that contributes to the issue. You can tell this if the actuators struggle to work with engine off but are fine with engine running.

Has the cables in the door rubbers been checked for breaks and or continuity?

These are the rubber gaiters between the body and the doors, the cables there can become brittle and break over time. ____\We|Will|Win/___
