2.4 Puma Stub Axels
Hi All!

From what I can gather, the front stub axles have a bearing, inner seal, thrust washer, and outer seal while the rear stub axles only have the inner seals?

Is this correct? No bearings and other bits in the rear?

I'm looking to buy replacements for my tired stub axle innards and not looking to replace the stub axles themselves yet (there's a kit for that so not much problem). What brought this about is that we found the front driver side stub axle bearing was kaputt and had to scrounge for a replacement, luckily there was a used one that we cleaned and re-greased. Mechanic buddy told me to secure all the stub axle innards for all 4 corners as that's one thing I neglected to buy when I bought parts for my rebuild.

I just want to make sure that my research is correct before I start ordering stuff. It could also help if someone can post the names and part numbers of the bits needed so I can counter check and to make sure that I do not forget anything.

Appreciate the assistance Thumbs Up No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

Many, especially those with 2 piece rear halfshafts, prefer not to have any seals in there, so can keep the drive member splines lubed with gear oil. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi Dinnu,

I upgraded to one piece drive member & shafts in the rear so maybe not necessary for that?

My fronts are Ashcroft bits though so the heavy duty drive member may benefit from the omission of the oil seal as you suggested? Which seal do I omit?

Thanks. No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

The front axle is a bit different. If you want the axle oil to lubricate the drive member splines you would have to allow oil into the swivel housing, where you today have grease, and then continue out through the stub axle. You would need to omit seal 8 and 23 to make that happen, but I would not advice. Grease the drive members instead.

Also, I see no point in changing bearings that hasn't manifested a problem. So I would only change the failed one and leave the other one.

I would not advise that either. On later axles, you will dilute the grease with final drive oil and vice versa (the former is a bigger problem as it could cause the swivels to leak). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Great to know! Thank you, both!

Just making sure now, when I grease the drive members, they have to be removed, cleaned, greased, then reinstalled? Grease on the drive member and shaft? Or do I just use a needle attachment on the grease gun and try to get as much grease in there without disassembly? No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

I just mix lithium grease with EP90 gear oil (approx 50/50) and put inside the drive member cap. I think it works its way in. You only need a very thin film of lubrication. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I just put molly CV grease onto the drive member splines, never had any problems with wear. The molybdenum in the grease is specifically for protecting against sliding/fretting wear. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hi Bluest,

Will the grease from Gwyn Lewis do the trick? How do I apply it, just put onto the cap and let it work into the splines or do I have to pull off the drive member, grease, then reinstall the drive member?

Thanks, Dinnu!

Sounds like a convenient solution in a pinch! No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

I would remove the drive member, grease the splines, new paper gasket and re-assemble. I don't know what grease GL supplies, if it's high mily content, should be good, usually dark grey in colour. You can get tubs of moly CV grease readily in Halfords or Euro Car Parts. Its a quick job, just remember to clean the old loctite from the bolt threads and put fresh on. Ideally clean out the female threads with a tap or thread chaser too. You can make one from an old bolt if need be. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I think he is referring to Morris K48, which is a great moly grease. https://www.morrislubricantsonline.co.uk/k48-moly-grease.html

GW recommends it’s use on UJ’s as well.
