Conclusion: no decent quality single DIN units with CarPlay
Can either find, good quality flip out single DIN or good quality double DIN but not good quality single DIN with a CarPlay feature. All the single DIN CarPlay units seem to be cheap devices that have very low output and i assume lower sound quality than the standard LR unit that I already have.

Have i missed something here ?

Must it be a single din front size, as I’ve got a fairly good single DIN with a double DIN screen which fits a TD5 style Dash really nicely for 100 quid from Amazon, runs CarPlay the best I’ve had on an aftermarket head unit (my other double din drops out all the time)

Sound quality is OK but it’s a Defender Laughing

Yes that’s a good thought, single DIN base unit with fixed larger screen. Yours actually looks very good from that perspective although i wonder if you know the output power it has or maybe just a link ?

Thanks

If 1 DIN is an option to you, you might want to consider a Pioneer AVH 7200DAB. ____\We|Will|Win/___

I wish I’d had commission because every time I post it people want to know how to buy one Laughing several people got one after seeing it on my instagram.

Sadly it appears no longer available on Amazon, I found it searching for “single din CarPlay”

This was the listing: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CF5DS17F?psc...merReviews

No affiliation, just pleased with it

There is this one on Aliexpress (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009566...in_prod%3A

I bought one, it worked OK, the handsfree was rubbish. I have it here if you want it. It ended up being too small for me to see.

I ordered a OD8-CAM003 from aliexpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007479090100.html in October 2024. The screen was low resolution and it felt a bit grainy/laggy/glitchy in its general operation. It lasted four months and then died.

I ordered another OD8 in March 2025 from a different URL ( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007572754810.html )
The screen is much higher resolution and it is smooth/non-glitchy in its operation.

The units clearly have different hardware and/or software, but at face value are "the same"

I would not recommend the first OD8 that I bought, but would definitely recommend the second one! > 110 XS Double Cab

There's this looong thread Smile
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic93497.html

So far I'm happy with the cheap unit (display is a bit dark) but I use an external amp twice as expensive as the head unit (a Pioneer, which failed on the first trip - so much for brand quality, replaced it and no failure since).

As per this, I'm still using my £33 AliExpress unit every day and it's been great. I have upgraded speakers and it's plenty lound enough in my old rattler!

Pre-Puma Td5 dash here, the angles for a large screen are ridiculous.

I've been searching for a decent single DIN with floating screen. A lot of cheap stuff like BOSS or Amazon specials. Or super expensive stuff that are beyond my snack bracket.

Anyone tried the Sony AVX 8100? It's around $700 CDN (375 GBP) Not expecting the best sound or the best screen, but Carplay and messaging are a must.
