Would the quality not be as good then?
I always bought Mobil but now seems very hard to find or if you do it’s very expensive |

I don't know anything about Smith Allan, but the fact they are just a blender isn't necessarily a bad thing. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I use this Smith & Allen oil in the L322 and D4 and have never had an issue.
It's even cheaper if you buy it 20l at a time. Defender Td5 Commercial 2002 Range Rover L322 TDV8 Westminster 2012 Discovery 4 SDV6 Landmark 2016 |

I've been using them for a while now as it's easy and cheap to order no complaints but I change my engine oil every 6k miles in my Td5 and other oils every year depending on use 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Smith & Allen are a good lubricant company.
Used them for all sorts on my land rovers over the years and also run a lot of our farm/plant equipment with it. I’m a bit of an oil snob and OCD gets the better of me with my 90 now, so I run Swepco in the g/box, t-fer box, diffs etc. and Fuchs titan 5/40 meeting VW 505 01 spec for the engine. |

It’s always hard to judge how well an engine oil has performed without robust scientific testing over long periods of its use in real world engines over many miles and years. Even then it may perform better or worse in different engines so it’s very hard to judge if it’s the best oil for our particular engines..
We end up relying on good specifications, hopping they are sufficiently robust and applicable to our engines and driving patterns. Plus rely on the manufacturers to constantly and consistently adhere to or exceed those specifications in the products they supply. Hence I look for a reputable manufacturer, with positive feedback, who have been in business for a longtime, meet the spec for my engine and supply at a reasonable price. I also believe that changing oils more frequently makes the biggest difference, especially engine oil for a 2.2 that has a DPF. Smith and Allen seem to meet my criteria and their C1 2.2 spec oil is a very good price, especially in a 20 Litre can. This makes it ideal for those like me that change their oil at circa 5k miles intervals. So I will do a little more research on them and if happy order a 20 Litre can. PS M94PUMA - I’m assuming you are not running a 2.2 if you are using that spec engine oil as it’s not a C1 low SAPs oil suitable for a 2.2. |

Apart from checking the specification beyond viscosity rating, which we assume are independently verified, the difference between a high and less high quality oil must be in the longevity (miles change interval).
The question then is how much longer can you run a high quality oil and do you do you have the balls to do that (20k miles everyone?). I think most of us will chicken out and prefer a shorter interval in which case you can ask if it's worth paying for a premium branded oil? |

If there's any uncertainty, you could always run it for a period, say half the service interval, and then have an oil analysis done. That'll tell you if it's still in-grade, levels of wear metals etc. Costs about £40. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
