Yeah I suspect. Sure doesn't feel like there's any hole or tear in the hose and the spot seems to be right at the end. Waiting all day to refit but it's rain cats and dogs out...
Anyways. Here's the hose ![]() Click image to enlarge From the front. For the life of me I'm not seeing it labeled in the workshop manual! The component it's going to should be the brake pump? It looks like it's coming from the EGR or exhaust side. ![]() Click image to enlarge With regards to the smoke. I had a look at the air filter. Does this seem dirty enough to be causing problems? Never happened before, serviced and filters changed (according to my bill) in January 3-5K miles ago. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge 110 SW 2.4 IZUMI BLUE |

That is the coolant hose going from the back of the pump to the water manifold. And, the filter does not look too bad.
If it helps to somebody regarding CR injector bench testing: Test results reliably confirm when an injector is in good condition; however, a defective injector may not always produce a definitive fault signal. Changed the injector o rings today.
Hasn't made any difference to thenoise i am hearing - the putt putt. I can hear this in the engine bay and also if i put my ear to the air intake in the wing I think i can hear it at the exhaust tip also. So my thinking is - what connects both the exhaust and the intake to create noise and ti also send so much soot back into the intake. I can only think of the EGR and head gasket (assuming i dont have damaged pistons or valves) The black smoke has gone - putting that down to the filthy MAP sensor. Itās getting covered in ash/carbon/soot again after just 100km of general driving. No oil consumption Drives fine 2010 90 LHD soft top 2010 110 XS 2008 110 E LHD 1985 90 soft top |

Noises at the exhaust make me think on a valve issue.
Have you check the EGR opening range via live data? Maybe your intake circuit is just full of soot translating into a rich mixture affecting as well the turbo vanes. At the very last I would think on removing the valve cover (and injectors) and turn the engine to check valves/rockers. You can reuse the copper shims after you anneal them. The OP stated
āPrevious owner says the car has an EGR blanking plate fitted - from what he says I think itās at the cooler/exhaust connectionā So to do that the EGR should have been mapped out, which in a lot of cases means the EGR is left in situ but permanently shut. I would investigate the blanking plate to see if itās holed due to heat and pressure and check that the EGR valve is actually closed fully shut. |

Thanks IanH and MK
Iāll get it booked in to my local LR dealer They can have a rummage around and see what is what. The remap for the blanking plate definitely hasnāt been done - he confirmed, he thought it was too old to need it. I can see on my nano that the percentage of the EGR valve demand open changes as i drive. I will listen more carefully for the self clean noise next time I drive it, but in the past i have heard it. 2010 90 LHD soft top 2010 110 XS 2008 110 E LHD 1985 90 soft top |

Thanks. Got it. Just moved the car since Wednesday. The smoke is bad guys. Just parked to cool down a bit before I take that hose off to check it. Will have a look at the MAP sensor as well, changed both MAF and MAP a few months ago but just to be sure. Checked the MAF when I took the filter out, clean as day 1. After this, might have to go into the intercooler to see if it's sooted up. Let me know if there's anything within DIY realm I could check. After this it's injectors out and to the tech. OH!!! Also! Have a look at this and say if it's worth a try... Willing to do anything but take this car to these "mechanics" we have here. 110 SW 2.4 IZUMI BLUE |

Itās a nice evening and mine is LHD so access to the end of the exhaust cooler where it meets the exhaust is easy.
Thought I was on to something - the gasket came out leaving what i thought was a blanking plate - but no, something like a shim - possibly home made. So unless the blank is at the EGR end of the cooler (dont think so) it doesn't have one. Previous owner was wrong. I took this opportunity to clean off the mess I made yesterday pulling the injectors out - bit of gunk - lovely stuff. As i washed off i could see bubbles coming from the turbo vane arm (not the actuator rod). Turbo is only a few months old. Is it normal for air to leak from here? ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge 2010 90 LHD soft top 2010 110 XS 2008 110 E LHD 1985 90 soft top |

![]() Click image to enlarge Well look at that. First response was spot on! Intercooler hose was split underneath and was spraying on the coolant hose. As I was undoing the latter I was thinking 'this doesn't make sense for that fluid to be coming out from here." Also cleaned up the MAP sensor. From what I've seen of the intake, when the glow plugs were changed, this entire engine needs de-carboning. When you think it's asthma it's really lung cancer... ![]() Click image to enlarge Sealed up the split best I can, should be ok till I get the hose replaced. Wish me luck. 110 SW 2.4 IZUMI BLUE Last edited by TriniDaddy on 10th Sep 2025 10:17pm. Edited 1 time in total |

So I assume the shim did not completely blank the EGR cooler ingress, and there is no other blanking plate blocking the flow of exhaust gasses into or out of the EGR, is that correct ? If thatās the case and itās confirmed the EGR has not been mapped out, then you have a normal working EGR system, which could be the source of the soot you are getting on the MAP sensor IF itās not working correctly. However in general a non working EGR with cause a DTC and potentially an Amber Malfunction indicator Lamp ( MIL) to illuminate. Therefore it could be worth removing and cleaning your EGR , itās likely itās gummed up with soot. A long shot and Fiddly but cheap to do. Ps. Sorry, just double checking, did you give the injector seats a thorough clean with a specialist brush kit to ensure your new seals would seat correctly and gas tight once injectors were refitted? |

So, as it stands. The leak is sealed, power is back, by all indications fuel economy and smoked is greatly reduced, all but eliminated. The bit I'm still seeing I suspect that to be residue from the past couple weeks before I found the leak. Now, the issue is this. From the intake manifold to EGR to this intercooler hose, everything is sooty and filthy. I'm pretty sure the intercooler is as well as they are all connected and I'm seeing some kind of film at the point the hose connects to it. So is this a sign the turbo is leaking? It's not supposed to be oily inside the components is it? ![]() Click image to enlarge 110 SW 2.4 IZUMI BLUE |

Ianh
Thanks for your interest as always. The āshimā was full bore - same size as the OE gasket. No idea why it was there. Was Like itās made of coke can. I left it out and bolted back up. Yes I purchased the seat cleaning tool and new o rings, new stretch bolts etc. There is a local supply who does refurbed injectors for 200euro a set (on an exchange basis with test certs - used him before). Just ordered a set and will drop them in now I know how easy it is. I have a Bosch VCV might as well stick that in and have ordered a new EGR (genuine - donāt want to do it twice) I was surprised the turbo was leaking a bit via the vane actuator arm. Might be normal. I know the PO and he is a bit of cheapskate, so whilst he did fit a new turbo it will be the cheapest of the cheapest. I can get a garrett exchange for about 600 euro - I am considering it. Valveās and head gasket - it runs and pulls too well I feel to be anything mechanically serious. No current DTC - I did go through a period where the engine light would come on quite often - you helped me diagnose the low range switch was linked out (telling the ECU itās in low range mode) hasnāt happened since even on a 1000km run up to Poland. The DTCs in the past were - MAF - higher and lower than expected and occasionally turbo over pressure. Fuel economy is what I would expect with a roof rack No oil in the water or the other way Little bit of pressure with the oil cap off - but the same as my other 2.4 Oil catcher on order. I am thinking fit the VCV, EGR injectors and oil catcher, then give it a good service. All filters. Try and flush the intercooler - that soot canāt be helping. Could the putt putt putt I hear on the intake be the EGR letting by? EGR demand changes with load - can see this on my nano. 2010 90 LHD soft top 2010 110 XS 2008 110 E LHD 1985 90 soft top |

Itās just done 160k km - so about 100k miles, in the past this is where I have found some items start to need attention. Injectors could be due for example 2010 90 LHD soft top 2010 110 XS 2008 110 E LHD 1985 90 soft top |
