Black smoke
Evening all!

New problem today.

My 2008 110 has got very smoky. Little down on power I think. No smoke when accelerating hard, but lots when holding a speed.

It’s the black smoke associated with overfilling/air problems

Has new hoses
New MAP
New MAF - but thought I would just check.

This is only 3 months old - about 5000km since changing.

Previous owner says the car has an EGR blanking plate fitted - from what he says I think it’s at the cooler/exhaust connection

Exhaust tip is very sooty

If the EGR is blanked what could cause the MAP to get so sooty so quickly?

I think I can hear a putt putt putt noise from the air intake on the wing.

Have cleaned up eve thing and will take for a run tomorrow.

I have spent 3 hours searching here - but can’t find anything definitive

Any pointers greatly appreciated 2010 90 LHD soft top

Sounds like a split intercooler hose

Have you a diagnostic tool to check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC’s) ?

Thanks for the replies

New silicon hoses all round
No error codes on my BB evo

Might change the VCV next - have one in the shed

Will go to the local dealer next week and get them to pressure test the air side - might be a blocked or leaking intercooler 2010 90 LHD soft top

Perhaps warn injector seals causing pressure in the crankcase that vents via the breather pipe into the turbo inlet hose, then onwards to the map sensor and gunking it up. That could explain the intake noise as well.

So cleaning the MAP sensor worked - no smoke now

Just the WHY to solve

Have ordered an injector seal kit along with rocker cover gaskets, stretch bolts etc

Also ordered the seal seating tool to make sure its all good - couldn't find the exact size of the injectors so got the universal kit

Seen a few how to guides on the tube - looks easy enough

Oil change once done

I am guessing my intake system from the point the breather connects will be full of soot also.

Are the aerosol spray cleaners any good?

I wont start the conversation about squirting water mist/coca cola/snake oil into the intake. 2010 90 LHD soft top

Are you sure the air filter isn’t dirty?

While your there, put a few drops of lube on the tube actuator pivots and check the vanes are free. Thumbs Up ____\We|Will|Win/___

Just take your time taking the plastic return pipes off the injectors, they can be brittle if they’re original. And don’t drop/lose the green retaining clips for them. 2017 L494 Range Rover Sport SVR

Consider also fitting a catch can to the breather.

+1 on fitting a catch-can/oil-separator in the breather line.

I have removed the EGR and replaced injector seals. Virtually no blow by if I open the oil filler. Still my oil separator picks up a little oil between oil changes, say under 100cc every 5K. Not much, true, but I'd rather it didn't get into my intake system. Makes me wonder why the intercooler doesn't have a drain.

On the injector removing, be very very careful that the little plug from the toolkit that fits in the hole at the bottom to stop detritus getting into the cylinder while cleaning is a good fit. Some topics on here have been on the nightmare scenario of that plug dropping into the cylinder !!!!!

On the catch can. A genuine provent is the way to go, not cheap Chinese or fake and there are a lot of fakes out there. Most use a provent 200 but some a 100. Lots of topics on here including fitting location and hose adapters.
