Commer Vans were a mainstay of the UK roads at one point.
The groundskeeper at my junior school had a flat bed with tilt to cart round his tools. I think they got branded Dodge in the last years. BT liked them. Great on Tarmac, totally uncontrollable on wet grass ![]() |

passed a corsa B, these practically have vanished! Used to laugh at the boy racers with the 1.1 big bores. I remember one of the lads at work, trying to race me in his years ago, yep daft enough to race a 2.0 Turbo diesel going up a hill. He had been knocking diesels and knocked the306, as he thought diesels were slow. I over took him with out ease and continued on as normal. He told my mate that he had saw me, My pal said yeah nice bit of kit, that procta has there. The lad its quick too, as he over took me and left me standing. My mate replied, we take the mick out of it due to been a diesel, but no one said it was slow.
![]() Not the last time i have shown a corsa up, My little metro 1.1s did too, that was very funny that one. The fools didnt suspect that to be running a 1.8 160bhp vvc engine in. ![]() In the words of my Good Friend, Gary Forrest 1980 -2025 " we will work something out" |

With no smoke, there’s no poke.
![]() Too many people underestimate torque and gearing with diesels, plus the fact that with 2wd, they can spend more time wheel spinning from the off rather, than actually taking off with 4wd. Take the Jeep Cherokee Trackhawk Hemi. As an example it is gas yes (petrol) but 8speed with high torque and AWD. You’re talking big block CC, but the AWD makes a big difference with launch control as well. ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

Saw a mitzibushi Shogun this week.
Remember back in the 90s when everyone had one and said they will outlast my Land Rover? Apart from Toyota and Honda you don’t see many foreign 80s or 90s “suv” type 4x4s? I know Disco 1s are short on the ground but you still see them. Or is it a case of I don’t notice the Jap Cr*p. |

Talking of Japanese 4x4’s. I’ve not seen an Isuzu Trooper for a long while, They stopped making them in 2002 so I really should not be surprised at not seeing any.

i was about to say the Isuzu Trooper, those were normally favourite for towing touring caravans on sites. I remember a site warden, on the site we were staying at, back in 2000. He picked up a right old deal, with the Trooper and Caravan. The dealer he got it off, said the bloke had not long got the full setup, but died suddenly, His wife didn't drive or something a long those lines, and sold it all on. The warden said it was massive package deal. Which i think planted the seed for my dad to go 4x4 later on. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

A lot of it is the parts network, LR has a big following both Genuine and aftermarket and parts are readily available even back to early models. A lot of the foreign brands just drop off parts manufacturing, and other than scrap reclamation which inevitably runs out it becomes more and more progressively difficult to get the parts. There used to be a log of Suzuki SJ’s around, but they became thin on the ground. That being said a quick search shows there is a new one to add to the Jimny coming out. I’m not a fan as they are too small, a 90 Def suits me, but I wouldn’t want smaller at all. (Just my opinion). The only advantage they have is they might fit a few places even a 90 wouldn’t, but I don’t really see that to be that much of a benefit. There used to be a few old SJ’s around that were a “beater” truck, often used just off road in very overgrown lanes as they’d be bashed up so much by hedges and all sorts they were so low value and repairs bashed up with a bit of sheet metal and welder as a plaything off road on a budget. The trouble is I expect a lot of them didn’t get an MOT, and then that was it really, parked up and then rotted. Defenders are way more robust! ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

Hi, my mate Jimmers runs a Vauxhall Monterey LWB 3.1 TD ( rebadged Isuzu Trooper ) it’s a big old bus , he runs a pub in a pretty remote village on Exmoor that does get cut off and it’s an ideal vehicle for him, I do see another one in and around Minehead that is absolutely mint but as mentioned they are a rare sight nowadays ![]() |
